OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Six graded stakes wins and a couple of runner-up finishes over the last two weekends helped to formulate the contingent of horses trainer Chad Brown will be taking to the 41st Breeders’ Cup on Nov. 1-2 at Del Mar. While perhaps smaller than in most years, Brown’s cast of eight – perhaps as many as 10 – will be quite formidable. Chancer McPatrick’s eye-catching victory in Saturday’s Grade 1 Champagne at Aqueduct likely stamps him as the favorite for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Carl Spackler’s front-running tour de force in Saturday’s Grade 1 Coolmore Turf Mile at Keeneland makes him a major player in the $2 million Mile. The victory by Ways and Means in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom on Sept. 29 coupled with the last-place finish by Sweet Azteca in Saturday’s Chillingworth Stakes at Santa Anita could vault Ways and Means to favoritism in the Filly and Mare Sprint, a race Brown has won each of the last two years. Brown’s list of Breeders’ Cup starters is expected to include Sierra Leone ($7 million Classic), Domestic Product ($1 million Dirt Mile), Raging Sea ($2 million Distaff), Zulu Kingdom ($1 million Juvenile Turf), and Virgin Colada ($1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf). Gina Romantica won Saturday’s Grade 1 First Lady at Keeneland, and Occult, second to Idiomatic in Sunday’s Spinster, would be possible Breeders’ Cup horses, though Brown favors the Grade 1 Matriarch on Dec. 1 at Del Mar for Gina Romantica. :: ON SALE NOW: DRF Breeders' Cup Packages! In 2019, Brown brought only eight horses to the Breeders’ Cup and won three races – the Turf with Bricks and Mortar, the Mile with Uni, and the Juvenile Turf with Structor. Brown has won the Filly and Mare Turf four times – at three different distances – but has been critical of the Breeders’ Cup’s decision to run the race at 1 3/8 miles and said he will not support the race this year. Chancer McPatrick gave Brown his fifth Champagne victory when he rallied from last to beat Tip Top Thomas by 2 1/4 lengths on Saturday. Of his previous four Champagne winners, three ran in the Juvenile with Practical Joke’s third-place finish in 2016 the best finish. Brown won the 2017 Juvenile – at Del Mar – with Good Magic, who finished second in the Champagne. “This horse seems to be in a different category,” Brown said of Chancer McPatrick, unbeaten in three starts. “His mental development, his laid-back demeanor, visually it looks like he’s dying for more ground. With those other horses, I’m not sure I had that this early. He’s a very unique horse for me to take to the race.” Carl Spackler will bring a three-race winning streak to the Mile. He set a pretty strong pace in the Coolmore Turf Mile and still ran his last quarter in 23.92 seconds. “He set very solid fractions and ran every step,” Brown said. “Just as long as he can do it again. It was a very good race, but a hard race.” Brown said Carl Spackler will remain at Keeneland to train toward the Breeders’ Cup. Raging Sea had a harder race than expected in Sunday’s Grade 2 Beldame, outfinishing Batucada by a head as a 1-9 favorite. Brown said he anticipated Raging Sea regressing off her hard-fought head win over Idiomatic – winner of Sunday’s Grade 1 Spinster at Keeneland – and hopes the Beldame has her prepared to take on Idiomatic and Thorpedo Anna in the Distaff. Raging Sea, who got a 97 Beyer Speed Figure for her Personal Ensign victory, received only an 86 for the Beldame. “I’m confident with the four weeks I have and her not having run a fast figure today, that she’ll be able to circle back to that Saratoga race, and that race, with the right pace, is good enough to be competitive out there,” Brown said. Brown’s biggest disappointment over the weekend was Sunday’s Miss Grillo Stakes where Lavender Disaster was carried out and eliminated from the race at the head of the lane by Brown’s own Marvelous Madison, who inexplicably bolted under Manny Franco. Brown did run second with Virgin Colada – who was beaten 2 1/2 lengths by Scythian. Brown said Virgin Colada would go to the Juvenile Fillies Turf, a race Brown has won six times. :: BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more Sierra Leone, Brown’s contender in the Classic, has been moved from Saratoga to Belmont Park where on Saturday he worked a half-mile in 48.86 seconds over the training track. Domestic Product, winner of the H. Allen Jerkens in his most recent start, also has been transferred to Belmont Park where he will have a chance to get three workouts in before shipping to California for the Breeders’ Cup. On Saturday, at Saratoga, Domestic Product worked a half-mile in 50.56 over the Oklahoma training track. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
