OZONE PARK, N.Y. – There is no stakes race Sunday at Aqueduct, but the first-level allowance feature scheduled for one mile on the nine-race card has drawn a competitive field of 10 topped by an uncoupled entry from the Chad Brown barn. Core Conviction, a 4-year-old gelding by American Pharoah, makes his first start against winners in this spot, while Winter Pool, a 4-year-old gelding by Curlin, seeks his third victory while coming off a solid runner-up finish two months ago at Keeneland. In January, Core Conviction debuted at Gulfstream Park, finishing fourth in a maiden turf race. He trained on for two months after that race before going to the sidelines in mid-March. With a strong work tab under his belt, Core Conviction returned Nov. 11 at Aqueduct to win a seven-furlong maiden race by 5 1/2 lengths. The runner-up, Waxman, came back to win a Dec. 2 maiden race here keying a 1-2-5 finish from three horses out of that November race. “We were very high on him going into that maiden race that he won, not surprised at all that he ran well on dirt and he’s trained well out of the race,” said Dan Stupp, the Belmont Park-based assistant to Brown. “Both horses give us a chance.” Core Conviction will likely show speed from the rail under Jose Ortiz, while Winter Pool, who beaks from post 9, will likely be closing under Manny Franco. :: Join DRF Bets and play the races with a $250 First Deposit Bonus. He had two narrow losses before breaking through with a victory in a starter allowance going 1 1/8 miles on Aug. 25 at Saratoga. On Oct. 16 at Keeneland, Winter Pool was a five-wide rallying second behind Ducale, the odds-on choice that day who was a front-running winner after setting comfortable fractions. “He’s cutting back from two turns, I don’t think it’ll be a problem,” Stupp said. “I think he’ll give a pretty good account of himself; he’s doing very well.” Adare is only 1 for 14 in his career, but he has four seconds and four thirds. A 5-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro, Adare was beaten a head by Miles D in this condition on Oct. 24. Miles D came back to win the Grade 3 Discovery. On Nov. 19, Adare finished second to Untreated, a stakes-caliber runner from the Todd Pletcher barn who was coming off a layoff. “He’s a talented horse, it’s been very frustrating, but I do think he’s come up against some talented, late-developing horses,” trainer Neil Drysdale said. “He’s more comfortable doing the one-turn mile, but after this race he’ll come back to California.” Auburn Hills finished behind Winter Pool at Saratoga and then came back to win a starter going a one-turn mile at Churchill in September. He finished a well-beaten fourth in the same race Adare finished second on Sept. 26. The New York-bred Kaz’s Beach has never finished worse than third in five starts at Aqueduct. Dust Devil, My First Grammy, Semper Fidelis, Three Jokers, and Carrothers complete the field.
