LEXINGTON, Ky. - It looked as though there were several potential winners, on paper, of the Grade 3, $600,000 Bryan Station Stakes for 3-year-olds on the Keeneland turf Saturday. It played out that way in living color, as Brilliant Berti emerged from a scramble of horses in the final sixteenth for a neck win.  Brilliant Berti, who had been ninth under Brian Hernandez after the opening six furlongs, edged out Cherie DeVaux-trained stablemate Depiction, the second-longest shot on the board. It was another length to Herchee in third. Favored Trikari, who was seeking his fourth graded stakes win of the year, successfully worked his way in from post 10 to save some ground, but then wound up checking in traffic, and a six-wide rally in the late stages came up short in sixth.  The time for the mile on the firm turf, that did not see much rain this month, was 1:34.40. This was the second straight stakes win, and third in his last four outings, for Brilliant Berti ($8.18) of Klein Racing. After finishing fifth in his debut - the only unplaced effort of his career - the colt won three straight races during the spring meet at Churchill Downs, culminating with the American Derby. He then finished second to Trikari in the Grade 2 Secretariat Stakes in August at Colonial Downs. He bounced out of that to win the Gun Runner Stakes last month at Kentucky Downs.  :: Bet with the Best! But from there it’s just been an upward trajectory for him.” Of Depiction, DeVaux said, “He’s a horse that’s shown a lot of ability, but he’s had a hard time getting the trip. He has looked great coming into this race, and that’s not always been the case.” Earlier on the card, Long Neck Paula ($7.50) beat the boys in the $200,000 Bowman Mill Stakes for juveniles, wearing down favored leader Macho Music and then holding off a late charge from Tough Catch for a half-length victory at the wire.  Long Neck Paula, a daughter of Uncle Mo, was a $500,000 purchase out of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s March sale of 2-year-olds in training earlier this year. She has been a productive runner since for Will Stroud and Debra O'Connor and trainer Wesley Ward. After a debut win at Churchill Downs and finishing third in the Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga, she won the Prairie Meadows Debutante by 7 1/2 lengths in August.  Long Neck Paula, who was ridden on Saturday by Junior Alvarado, finished the six furlongs in 1:10.92. After she and Tough Catch across the line, it was 3 1/4 lengths to Terrapin Station, who overhauled the fading Macho Music by a head for third.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
