Brethren, a Grade 3-winning half brother to Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, has been retired from racing and will make his stallion debut in 2014 at Journeyman Stud in Ocala, Fla. The 5-year-old son of Distorted Humor was a buzzed-about juvenile following Super Saver’s derby-winning campaign earlier in 2010, and Brethren finished that year undefeated in two starts. He began 2011 with a win in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes, then finished third in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby. Brethren continued racing into his 5-year-old season, also picking up a win in this year’s Evangeline Mile Handicap at Evangeline Downs. He finished his career with five wins in 18 starts for earnings of $386,465. He last raced for owners WinStar Farm and Winchell Thoroughbreds and trainer Steve Asmussen. Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, Brethren is out of the winning A.P. Indy mare Supercharger, who is the dam of four winners from as many foals to race. In addition to Derby winner Super Saver, she is also the dam of multiple stakes-placed winner Lisa T. Brethren’s notable family members include champion Rhythm, Grade 1 winners Girolamo and Bluegrass Cat, Grade 2 winners Daydreaming and Lord of the Game, and Grade 3 winners Get Lucky and Accelerator. Prominent Mid-Atlantic sire Not For Love is also a relative. “We’re excited to get a stallion that possesses Brethren’s combination of talent and depth of pedigree,” said Brent Fernung, owner of Journeyman Stud. “He was a brilliant 2-year-old and a graded stakes-winning 3-year-old on the Derby trail, but it’s his tremendous looks and family that really gets you excited about him. There’s not a better family in the stud book. Florida breeders will love this horse.” Brethren will stand as property of Arindel Farm and Winchell Thoroughbreds. His stud fee will be announced at a later date.
