LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Yesterday, things didn't go as planned with Wonder Wheel, as the free-wheeling filly found herself back in the pack at the start of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Rather than rushing her, jockey Tyler Gaffalione calmly worked out a trip, and the result was a scintillating victory, Gaffalione's first Breeders' Cup score. On Saturday, Gaffalione again had to make an adjustment, this time on 42-1 Caravel in the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland. Favored Golden Pal was expected to set the pace in the 5 1/2-furlong BC Turf Sprint, but got away last, a stunning development that elicited a moan from the Keeneland crowd. Gaffalione quickly sent Caravel to the front, and she controlled the tempo and held off Emaraaty Ana to win by a half-length. "She broke alertly, no one really went, so I decided to take control of things," Gaffalione said. "Coming into the stretch, she just kept finding more." :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2022: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division Caravel ($87.78) came to the Breeders' Cup off a local victory in the Grade 3 Franklin, but she also appeared to come in at an inopportune spot in her form cycle, as all year she had run best every other race. "She was running back in 20 days, but had a race over the course," Cox said. "She was doing extremely, extremely well. She’s a filly that has had a hard time keeping on weight, and since the end of the summer, she’s really blossomed. We decided to take a swing." Golden Pal, based at Keeneland, came to the Turf Sprint off a stakes-record victory in the Grade 2 Woodford Stakes here four weeks ago, which kept him unbeaten in North American stakes company. Seeking to become just the third horse to win three Breeders' Cup races after having taken the 2020 Juvenile Turf Sprint and 2021 Turf Sprint, he was sent off Saturday at 6-5. But when the gates opened, the colt, who typically shows blazing early foot, was away last. Meanwhile, Caravel was away cleanly from post 10 in the full field of 14, and when Gaffalione did not see Golden Pal heading to the front inside of him, he put the mare on the engine. Hounded by Arrest Me Red and Artemus Citylimits, Caravel kicked off to a length lead and ticked off the opening quarter-mile in 21.91 seconds on the firm turf course. Caravel continued to shake off her pursuers along the turn, and cut the corner with a half-length lead over Arrest Me Red, who soon beat a steady retreat. But Emaraaty Ana, who had always been within striking distance, found a seam up the inside under Ryan Moore and came on strongly. Caravel dug in and held on by a half-length. The final time for the 5 1/2 furlongs was 1:01.79. Caravel earned a 107 Beyer Speed Figure. Sheikh Fahad Al Thani of Qatar Racing, one of the owners of Caravel, said Gaffalione had “free rein” to ride the race as he saw fit. “We did anticipate Golden Pal to be up there, and it changed our game plan completely, really,” said Al Thani. “It's tough to be out there from gate to wire. And she's a tough filly to do that." :: Get access to Breeders' Cup Clocker Reports with our special VIP Package and save off the retail price.   Emaraaty Ana at 21-1 filled out an $881 (for $1) exacta under Ryan Moore. "We thought we were going to get there, and it was a great race," said Adam Ryan, assistant to his father, Kevin, who trains Emaraaty Ana. "I know he was a big price, but we couldn’t have the horse in better condition. We had the right man on board in Ryan. Fair play to the winner - obviously a very brave filly.” Creative Force checked in just a neck back in third after rallying from eighth in the stretch. It was another length to Highfield Princess in fourth. Highfield Princess came into the BC Turf Sprint off three consecutive Group 1 victories. "I couldn’t be more proud of her," trainer John Quinn said. "She’s had a long season, so she’ll have a well-deserved holiday now and she’ll come back in to training for next season." After that came Artemus Citylimits, Flotus, Campanelle, Arrest Me Red, Casa Creed, Golden Pal, Cazadero, Go Bears Go, and Naval Crown. Golden Pal made an early move into sixth, but flattened out and finished 10th in what was planned to be his final start before retiring to owner Coolmore's Ashford Stud. Irad Ortiz, Jr., said he had "no comment" on Golden Pal's trip, and trainer Wesley Ward was not immediately available trackside. :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Caravel, a 5-year-old Pennsylvania-bred Mizzen Mast mare, was 12th in the 2021 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar, and days later was bought for $500,000 by Qatar Racing, Marc Detampel, and Madaket Stables out of the Fasig-Tipton November mixed sale. She quickly delivered for her new owners and trainer Brad Cox, winning the Queen Stakes in March at Turfway. She also won the Grade 3 Intercontinental at Belmont in June, the Smart N Fancy at Saratoga in August, and the Grade 3 Franklin at Keeneland Oct. 16, which convinced her connections to take a shot at the Breeders' Cup. Caravel is cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale Monday. Whether she actually goes through the ring remains to be seen. "We'll see what's going on," Al Fahad said. "She's improving, which is going to make it very tough trying to sell her or keep her. But we'll see." :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
