For the first time since 2016, two of the top three finishers from the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France appear bound for the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 4.Westover and Onesto were no match for 9-5 favorite Ace Impact in Sunday’s $5.29 million Arc de Triomphe at 1 1/2 miles at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris, losing by 1 3/4 lengths. Westover (6-1) led briefly in the stretch, and finished a short head in front of Onesto (55-1).In 2016, Arc winner Found finished third in the BC Turf behind Highland Reel, who was second in that year’s Arc. Both were trained in Ireland by Aidan O’Brien, who has won the BC Turf a record six times. Found started between the Arc and BC Turf, running second in the Group 1 Champion Stakes at Ascot Racecourse in Britain.The last Arc winner to start in the BC Turf was Enable in 2018. Trained by John Gosden, Enable won the BC Turf as the ninth race of a 12-race winning streak that ended with a second in the 2019 Arc.The $4 million BC Turf at 1 1/2 miles is the richest turf marathon in the United States, and a race dominated by foreign runners, who have won the last three runnings and eight of the last 10.The trend is widely expected to continue this year.Aside from Westover and Onesto, the O’Brien-trained Auguste Rodin, winner of the English Derby and two other Group 1 races this year, and the Gosden-trained Mostahdaf, unraced since a win in the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York Racecourse in Britain in August, are rated as the top contenders.Westover and Onesto were hardly off the track before their trainers mentioned the BC Turf as a goal. Westover won the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud at 1 1/2 miles in Paris in July, and has been second in four other Group 1 races this year.“We could never have finished ahead of Ace Impact,” Westover’s trainer, Ralph Beckett, told the press. “One day he will win a big race. I’m thinking of the Breeders’ Cup now.”Onesto won the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris for 3-year-olds at 1 1/2 miles at Longchamp in 2022, but is winless in three starts this year. The Arc was his best performance of the season.“He finished very close to second; it’s great,” trainer Fabrice Chappet said of the Arc result. “For the future, it would be logical to compete in the Breeders’ Cup.”The BC Turf field will gain further clarity after Saturday’s Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at the Belmont at Aqueduct meeting, a race postponed a week because of severe rainstorms in the New York City area.Rebel’s Romance, winner of the 2022 BC Turf at Keeneland for British-based trainer Charlie Appleby, is a probable starter, along with the 6-year-old mare War Like Goddess, who won the 2022 Hirsch Turf Classic and was third in the 2022 BC Turf for American trainer Bill Mott.The lone California-based runner for this year’s BC Turf is expected to be Gold Phoenix, who won the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap on Sept. 7, but was fifth in the Grade 2 John Henry Turf Championship at Santa Anita last Sunday.
