LEXINGTON, Ky. - Charlie Appleby enjoyed a magical run through the 2021 Breeders' Cup, saddling three winners on the weekend at Del Mar. The trainer, who holds an outstanding strike rate at this event, came to Keeneland loaded for bear, and the magic was in the air early. Mischief Magic, carried the Godolphin blue, capitalized on a hot early pace, and finished with a flourish to catch fellow European Dramatised for a length win in the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint on Friday at Keeneland. Mischief Magic ($15.84) is the first European-based winner of the Juvenile Turf Sprint, which was added to the Breeders' Cup program in 2018. The Exceed And Excel colt is based at the Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket for Appleby, who is now 7 for 12 at the Breeders' Cup. He has six more entrants for this weekend's races, all highly regarded. "Look, fantastic ride by William [Buick] and a very winning horse," Appleby said. "It's been a fantastic season. For a homebred as well, it's great for the team and most importantly for our principal and team Godolphin." :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2022: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division Mischief Magic won three of his first four starts in England - including the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes around a right-handed turn on a synthetic track at Kempton, which Appleby considered an audition for the Breeders' Cup. The colt finished fourth in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes going six furlongs on Sept. 24 at Newmarket behind well-regaded juveniles Blackbeard - a multiple Group 1 winner who has since been retired with an injury - The Antarctic, and fellow Breeders' Cup entrant Persian Force. "Going into the Middle Park, we always had in our minds that it was going to be sort of a stepping-stone on to this race," Appleby said. "He was running with some of the best sprinters around in the U.K." The confidence of Appleby and Buick, who was aboard Mischief Magic in the Middle Park, grew in the weeks leading up to the Juvenile Turf Sprint, as it became clear that the full field would have a blistering early pace. "William sort of read the pace in the paddock that they were going to go hard," Appleby said. "William was happy to let our horse just find his legs." When the gates opened, Mischief Magic was off a step slowly from post 5 and was last in the field of 12 through the opening quarter, with Buick not rushing his mount. "He just got a little bit of lost and took him a bit to get into things the first furlong, furlong and a half," Buick said. The unbeaten Iowa-bred Tyler's Tribe, making his first start outside his home state and first on turf, and Speakeasy Stakes winner Speed Boat Beach were away from the gate in a hurry to clear the field from posts toward the outside. In doing so, they laid down an opening quarter of 21.65 seconds on a turf course rated firm after seeing just one day of rain this week after a long dry spell. American Apple pressed the pace, with The Platinum Queen, who was coming off a Group 1 win against older horses, avoiding the mad scramble from her outside post to track intently. Favored Love Reigns was not as lucky in the early going. Expected to show early foot from post 2, the filly was shuffled back to eighth and in traffic. :: Bet the Breeders' Cup with a $200 First Deposit Match and FREE Formulator PPs. Join DRF Bets. "Going to the quarter, we had traffic in front of us, so I had to take a little hold and go around," rider Irad Ortiz Jr. said. Mischief Magic still only had one horse beaten around the far turn. Buick was asking his mount, however, and they began making up ground while angling for room throughout. Coming into the stretch, American Apple forged her way to a half-length lead over Tyler's Tribe, but both swiftly faded as they were set upon by the closers. Dramatised, who had defeated both Love Reigns and The Platinum Queen at Royal Ascot earlier this year, had first run, bursting through along the rail under Ryan Moore to put a head in front of Persian Force coming to the final stages. But it was Mischief Magic who angled out and came with a furious rush. The colt made up some five lengths to strike the front in the shadow of the wire and scoot clear in a matter of strides. "He was traveling nice, and I was following the English filly, Dramatised," Buick said. "It sort of opened up just as we turned into the straight on the inside, and I had to switch out and just pick my run. But he was always full of running. And it was really only a matter of getting the split and for him to finish it off." Dramatised held second by a neck over Private Creed, who was also closing from off the pace. :: Breeders' Cup Friday and Saturday Past Performances are available now! "We thought we had it won half a furlong out, but Charlie's horse is a very good horse." Aided by the swift early pace, the final time was 1:02.41, a stakes record for the 5 1/2-furlong editions of the Juvenile Turf Sprint. The race has now been run three times at 5 1/2 furlongs and twice at five furlongs, owing to differing track configurations. The previous 5 1/2-furlong record of 1:02.82 was set by Golden Pal in the 2020 edition at Keeneland. Mischief Magic was given a Beyer Speed Figure of 89. After Private Creed, it was two lengths back to Persian Force, followed by Lady Hollywood, American Apple, Sharp Aza Tack, and then favored Love Reigns in eighth. "When I asked her, she took come time to start going," Ortiz said of Love Reigns. "She's better than that. Hopefully, she comes back good and we can turn the page." After Love Reigns came Speed Boat Beach, Oxymore, The Platinum Queen, and Tyler's Tribe, who was eased through the stretch and vanned off. Per Dr. Al Ruggles, the on-call veterinarian for the American Association of Equine Practicioners, the colt visibly bled and was given a ride back to the backstretch area as a precaution. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
