DEL MAR, Calif. – The last time jockey Rachel King rode in the United States she was winless in two races for amateur riders in Pennsylvania in 2011. She returns for Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in much different circumstances. King, 34, spent part of last winter riding in Japan, where she was closely allied with trainer Noriyuki Hori. The Hori-trained colt Satono Carnaval will be ridden for the first time by King in the BC Juvenile Turf. In the stables at Del Mar on Monday, King described her brief stay in Japan as a “learning” experience. :: Get the inside scoop from the morning workouts with Breeders' Cup Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the DRF Clocker Team “I hoped and dreamed something would happen, not necessarily coming to the Breeders’ Cup,” she said. “I thought it would be a Japanese horse coming to Australia. “It was an opportunity that was incredible for my career. I learned a lot. I was hoping to build connections for the future. The Breeders’ Cup wasn’t something I thought would happen.” Satono Carnaval is unbeaten in two starts, including a Grade 3 at about six furlongs at Hakodate Racecourse on July 13, his most recent start. The layoff does not concern King. “He’s a shrewd trainer and he wouldn’t be here if we didn’t have a proper winning chance,” she said of Hori. :: BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE TURF SPRINT: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more “The track he ran in his second start is a small, tight-turning track not dissimilar to here. He handled it well.” King was aboard Satono Carnaval for morning exercise for the first time on Monday, including a one-furlong work in 12 seconds. “The horse couldn’t be going any better,” she said. King rode in Australia on Saturday, winning a $660,000 race, and will remain in California until Saturday. King has a good reason to hurry back to Australia. On Monday night across American time zones, King has a mount in the Group 1, $5.63 million Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia’s most famous race. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
