Fire At Will got an easy lead winning the Pilgrim Stakes last month at Belmont Park. Friday at Keeneland, he didn’t need one. Ignored in the betting at 30-1, Fire At Will, sparked to life in upper stretch and toasted his 13 opponents in the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Drawing away powerfully after collaring pacesetter Outadore past the eighth pole, Fire At Will crossed the finish three lengths best. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2020: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division Ricardo Santana Jr. engineered a perfect trip for Fire at Will, breaking him sharply, angling to the fence, and sitting in the pocket just behind Outadore and inside pace-pressing Gretzky the Great. When Gretzky the Great couldn’t hold position after turning for home, Santana tipped Fire At Will out, and the colt quickly attacked Outadore and forged to the front with powerful strides. Battleground, favored at 7-2, raced from well off the pace and couldn’t find his best stride in time under Ryan Moore, coming home strongly to finish second while no match for the sharp winner. Outadore held third trying a route of ground for the first time and just edging Cadillac, who was balky at the gate but wound up getting a decent run under Shane Foley. In fifth came Sealiway, who had his chances at a better placing hurt when he had to steady before reaching the first turn. Fire At Will paid a robust $62.40 to win, and off splits of 23.64, 48.12, 1:12.40, and 1:24.22 completed his mile on turf in 1:35.81. He earned a 90 Beyer Speed Figure. Mike Maker trains Fire At Will for the Three Diamonds Farm of Kirk Wycoff. It was Maker’s third Breeders’ Cup win and first since Hansen won the 2011 Juvenile. “I tell you we have been high on him since Day 1 and with each race he’s got better,” Maker said. “It’s very satisfying to get Three Diamonds Farm their very first Breeders’ Cup win.”  Fire At Will finished sixth after being bothered in the homestretch debuting in a Saratoga turf-route maiden race, then won an off-turf maiden race before leading all the way in the slow-paced Pilgrim. :: Play the Breeders’ Cup with DRF! He put me where he wanted to be and that’s why we won.” Gretzky the Great, winner of the Grade 1 Summer Stakes, faded back to sixth, followed by The Lir Jet, Devilwala, Ebeko, Mutasaabeq, Go Athletico, Public Sector, Abarta, and New Mandate. Fire At Will is by Declaration of War out of Flirt, by Kitten’s Joy, and is the first foal to race out of the dam, a sister to high-level 3-year-old turf horse Decorated Invader. Fire At Will was bred by Troy Rankin and was sold at Keeneland’s 2019 September yearling auction for $97,000.
