All she needs is a chance. Sea Runner, who was stakes-placed at Del Mar last month and won a maiden race for 2-year-old fillies on turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 4, will be pre-entered on Monday for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 1, trainer Tim Yakteen said. By Wednesday, Yakteen and his clients, Joe and Debby McCloskey, will know whether Sea Runner has earned a berth among the 14 probable starters or is on an also-eligible list. The BC Juvenile Fillies Turf almost always draws more than 14 pre-entries resulting in an also-eligible list of horses ranked in order of preference. Last year, there were 25 pre-entries. Sea Runner finished third by 4 3/4 lengths in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf at a mile on Sept. 7. She could have started in the Grade 3 Surfer Girl Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 6, but the maiden race was chosen. Yakteen said that the maiden race win was a greater benefit. “Her development was more important in the longer term,” he said Friday. “Hence, we went the route of the maiden race. She’s young. She made a couple of mistakes in her previous races. We were looking to capitalize by going into easier company.” :: BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE FILLIES TURF: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more Yakteen said Sea Runner was “a little aggressive” in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf, but less so in her maiden win. “We wanted her a little kinder and a little more manageable,” he said. “You want her to be a little more responsive to the rider. I think that’s what we saw.” If Sea Runner does not gain a berth in the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf, she may start in the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante Stakes at a mile on turf for 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar on Nov. 30. On Friday at Santa Anita, Sea Runner worked a half-mile in 48.60 seconds. “She worked beautifully,” he said. “She had good energy and is in a good zone.” Yakteen plans to have as many as three other runners in Breeders’ Cup races – Johannes in the Mile, Sabertooth in the Juvenile Turf, and possibly McKinzie Street in the Juvenile. Johannes is unbeaten in four starts in stakes on turf in California this year. The 4-year-old colt is owned by the McCloskeys and is a half-brother to Sea Runner. Sabertooth was third by a head in the Grade 3 Zuma Beach Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 6, but was promoted to second after race winner Artislas was demoted to third for causing interference in the stretch. “He was unlucky not to get the win that day,” Yakteen said. Sabertooth was second by a half-length to Artislas in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf on Sept. 8. “He ran a really nice race in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf,” Yakteen said. “He keeps moving forward for us. He’s touting us that he’s moving in the right direction.” McKinzie Street has placed in consecutive Grade 1 races – a second in the Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs on Sept. 8 and a well-beaten third in the American Pharoah Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on Oct. 5. Yakteen said a decision on whether McKinzie Street starts in the Juvenile will be made this weekend after conversations with owners Pierre and Leslie Amestoy and Roger Beasley. On Friday, McKinzie Street worked a half-mile in 48.80 seconds at Santa Anita. :: ON SALE NOW: DRF Breeders' Cup Packages! The Amestoys and Beasley have had a major stakes win this fall. On Oct. 5, their 4-year-old Quarter Horse Out of the Way won the $350,000 Downs at Albuquerque Fall Championship at 440 yards. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
