Stablemates Kilwin and Totally Justified comprise the ideal tandem for trainer Rusty Arnold in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 1 – two stakes winners approaching the $1 million race in excellent form. A deep team will be a benefit for Arnold, too, in a one-mile race expected to draw a full field of 14 with runners from throughout the United States as well as Europe. Kilwin, unbeaten in two starts, won the $998,500 Untapable Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 8 in her stakes debut. Totally Justified won the $150,000 P.G. Johnson Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on turf at Saratoga on Aug. 28 before losing the Grade 2 Jessamine Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on turf at Keeneland by a nose on Oct. 4. :: BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE FILLIES TURF: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more From a betting perspective, both may be slightly overlooked in a field expected to include the talented North American stakes winners And One More Time, May Day Read, Scythian, and Thought Process and the prominent stakes-placed runner Destino d’Oro. Kilwin, owned by BBN Racing, will start at a mile for the first time at Del Mar. There are elements within her pedigree that give Arnold confidence Kilwin can handle a longer distance. By Twirling Candy, Kilwin is out of the unraced mare Spanish Star, who is a half-sister to Sir Winston, winner of the Belmont Stakes at 1 1/2 miles in 2019, and the dam of Just Basking, who was third by a length in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes at 1 1/4 miles at Saratoga on Aug. 17 in her most recent start. “I don’t think it will be an issue,” Arnold said of the distance. Kilwin closed from 11th of 12 to win the Untapable by a half-length, but Arnold said the late rally was caused by the unique undulating course at Kentucky Downs. “She was a little farther back than we thought she would be,” he said. “Different things happen at Kentucky Downs. Some horses don’t run down the hill very well. “I was concerned. She got the job done. I don’t think she’ll be farther back this time.” Totally Justified, owned by Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman and his family, led the Jessamine field by 1 1/2 lengths with a furlong remaining and finished second to May Day Ready in a bob of heads. May Day Ready was a nose in front of Totally Justified, who was a nose in front of Destino d’Oro. “The difference between first and third was an inch,” Arnold said. “The race was good. We got beat. We had a good trip and a good race.” Arnold, 69, has yet to win a Breeders’ Cup race with 16 runners. His only other starter in the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf was Concrete Rose, who finished eighth in 2018 at Churchill Downs, the only loss in her seven-race career. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
