The list of candidates for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita has been a fast-changing group in the last week. With the prep races completed, decision time has arrived. The people behind Ask Bailey, Jazzique, Mind Out, Powerful Breeze, and Witek said their runners would pass the one-mile turf race. Some fillies did not run to expectations in recent starts. Jezebel’s Kitten was fifth in the Grade 3 Jessamine Stakes on Oct. 9 at Keeneland after winning the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies Turf last month. A decision on her status for the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf will be made this weekend. Powerful Breeze was second by a head in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket Racecourse on Oct. 11 in England, leaving trainer Hugo Palmer looking toward the spring and the English 1000 Guineas. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2019: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, and more “It’s one of those things,” he said earlier this week. “We’re delighted with the performance and devastated by the result. “She’s a special filly and a lovely filly for us to have. All roads will lead toward the 1000 Guineas.” The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf is expected to be led by the European stakes winners Albigna and Daahyeh and Sweet Melania, an easy winner of the Jessamine Stakes. Other owners and trainers have found reasons to consider the race. Croughavouke, second in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf on Sept. 2 and the Surfer Girl Stakes on Oct. 6 at Santa Anita, is under strong consideration, co-owner Tim Cohen said. In the Surfer Girl Stakes, Croughavouke rallied wide on the turn of the one-mile race and was beaten three-quarters of a length by Warren’s Showtime. “She’s run well and she’s a tough filly,” Cohen said. “She should have won the race if she wasn’t carried wide.” Trainer Craig Lewis said last weekend that Warren’s Showtime remains under consideration for the Juvenile Fillies Turf, but could run in the $200,000 Golden State Juvenile Fillies for California-breds at seven furlongs on dirt on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita. Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won 12 Breeders’ Cup races, but is winless with 12 starters in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, including two second-place finishers. Last month, the O’Brien-trained Love won the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at The Curragh to earn an automatic berth. Sunday at The Curragh, the O’Brien-trained Tango won the Legacy Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at six furlongs to join the list of candidates for the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf. Tango, by No Nay Never, has won 2 of 8 starts. She was beaten in five Group 1 or Group 2 races from mid-June to late September in England and Ireland, including a fourth in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at six furlongs on Sept. 28 at Newmarket.
