Trainer Bob Baffert will have numbers but he is unlikely to have the favorite when he seeks a record sixth victory in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile to be run Nov. 1 at Del Mar. Baffert pre-entered three 2-year-olds in the Juvenile and though all of them are graded stakes winners, the trio of Gaming, Getaway Car, and Citizen Bull are likely to go off at longer odds than the likes of East Avenue and Chancer McPatrick, who figure to vie for favoritism in an intriguing renewal of the Juvenile. Daily Racing Form’s David Aragona set East Avenue, impressive winner of the Breeders’ Futurity, as the 5-2 favorite with Chancer McPatrick, the Hopeful and Champagne winner, next at 3-1. There were 13 horses pre-entered in the Juvenile but Dapper Moon is entered to run in Sunday’s Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs and is expected to run there, according to trainer Dallas Stewart. :: BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more Hill Road, a European-based Kentucky bred son of Quality Road, is also pre-entered in the Juvenile Turf, but he is eight deep on the preference list and unlikely to make that field. Baffert’s trio is topped by Gaming, a son of 2018 Juvenile winner Game Winner. Gaming won his debut at Del Mar in August and came back to win the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 8. Citizen Bull and Getaway Car ran one-two in the Grade 1 American Pharoah at Santa Anita on Oct. 5. Baffert has won the Juvenile five times – equaling D. Wayne Lukas – including in 2021 with Corniche, the last time the Juvenile was held at Del Mar. In 2017, when the Breeders’ Cup was held at Del Mar, Chad Brown won the Juvenile with Good Magic, despite being a maiden following second-place finishes in a maiden race and the Grade 1 Champagne. This year, Brown has Chancer McPatrick, who is 3 for 3 and perhaps the best horse he’s brought to this race. It is his running style that could be to his detriment, as he has been known to drop back and come with a run, which may work against him at speed-favoring Del Mar. “Good Magic had a little bit better positional speed than Chancer McPatrick. Nevertheless this horse is coming to the race undefeated where Good Magic came into the race always defeated,” Brown said. East Avenue, trained by Brendan Walsh, went gate to wire under Tyler Gaffalione to win the Breeders’ Futurity so his running style may give him a tactical edge over Chancer McPatrick. Ferocious, a smart-looking debut winner at Saratoga, has finished second behind both Chancer McPatrick (Hopeful) and East Avenue (Breeders’ Futurity). He will be reunited with Javier Castellano, just back from a hand injury that sidelined him for two months. Castellano was board Ferocious for the maiden win. Jonathan’s Way, trained by Phil Bauer, is 2 for 2 including a victory in the Grade 3 Iroquois at Churchill in September. McKinzie Street, third in the American Pharoah for trainer Tim Yakteen, and, Dr Ruben M, a maiden winner at Santa Anita on Oct. 14 for Doug O’Neill, round out the U.S.-based Juvenile pre-entrants. Shin Believe and Ecoro Azel, two Kentucky-bred, Japan-based runners and maiden winners, were also pre-entered in the Juvenile. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
