Trainer Bob Baffert is taking a fresh is best approach when it comes to preparing Prince of Monaco for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 3 at Santa Anita. Baffert, seeking a record sixth Juvenile victory, is expected to have three runners in the 1 1/16-mile race. Prince of Monaco, who is 3 for 3, is likely to be joined by Grade 1 American Pharoah one-two finishers Muth and Wine Me Up in the 40th running of the Juvenile. Prince of Monaco became Baffert’s 17th Del Mar Futurity winner when he won the Grade 1 fixture on Sept. 10. Eleven of Baffert’s 16 previous Del Mar Futurity winners ran in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. All but one of those 11 – Pinehurst in 2021 – had a race in between, including BC Juvenile winners Midshipman [2008] and Game Winner [2018]. Pinehurst, by the way, finished fifth in the 2021 Juvenile. Prince of Monaco won his maiden at Los Alamitos in July, the Grade 3 Best Pal on Aug. 13 at Del Mar, and the Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 10. “I just go by individual horses, the way I feel about them, and I just thought freshening him up would help him a little bit,” Baffert said. “He ran two really fast races” at Del Mar. The 103 Beyer Speed Figure earned by Prince of Monaco in the Best Pal remains the highest number earned by a 2-year-old this year. :: DRF Breeders' Cup Packages on sale now! That was after Baffert shipped Muth to Saratoga for the Grade 1 Hopeful, from which he scratched the morning of the race. “I had another horse I was going to run in the American Pharoah,” Baffert said. “I changed my mind, so I brought him home. I didn’t like that spot for” Muth. Though Baffert opted not to run Prince of Monaco after the Del Mar Futurity, the horse has been training steadily. On Monday, he had his fourth work since Del Mar, going six furlongs in 1:12.40 in company with the multiple graded stakes-winning 4-year-old filly Eda. “His last two works have gone really well,” Baffert said. Muth and Wine Me Up will likely return to the work tab this weekend at Santa Anita. Muth, by 2017 Juvenile winner Good Magic, successfully stretched out from six furlongs to 1 1/16 miles in the American Pharoah. Wine Me Up, by 2019 Classic winner Vino Rosso, also ran well in the American Pharoah, considering it was just his second career start and he too was stretching out from six furlongs to 1 1/16 miles. The Juvenile could come up with about 10 horses when pre-entries are made Monday. In addition to the Baffert trio, others likely to be pre-entered include Breeders’ Futurity one-two finishers Locked and The Wine Steward, Champagne one-two finishers Timberlake and General Partner, the Japan-based maiden Ecoro Neo, and the Irish-based colt Cuban Thunder. Todd Pletcher said Fierceness, seventh in the Champagne, and Be You, third in the American Pharoah, are still under consideration. Trainer Doug O’Neill said Raging Torrent, fourth in the Del Mar Futurity and American Pharoah, is no longer being considered. There is the likelihood of horses being pre-entered for the Juvenile Turf also being pre-entered in the Juvenile. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
