ARCADIA, Calif. — The 4-year-old filly Inspiral has collected rare accomplishments in her three-race career – multiple championships as well as major stakes wins in Britain and France. Add the United States to her list of successful venues. Inspiral won her American debut in Saturday’s $1.84 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, closing from ninth in the final furlong to catch a very unlucky Warm Heart. After the race, owner Richard Thompson said Inspiral will remain in training as a 5-year-old with trainer John Gosden in Britain. The 2024 BC Filly and Mare Turf at Del Mar could be an season-ending goal. Ridden by her regular rider Frankie Dettori on Saturday, Inspiral paid $7 as the favorite and gave her backers quite a thrill through the stretch. Dettori, who has relocated to California, has been the regular rider of Inspiral in recent seasons and is well aware of her style of racing. Dettori used that information as the Filly and Mare Turf developed. :: Bet with the Best! I found an opening on the outside. “I expected her to find top gear. When she found top gear, you could see past the line, she was flying. “Job done.” Starting at 1 1/4 miles for the first time, Inspiral was timed in 1:59.06. She finished a neck in front of 4-1 Warm Heart, another European filly with a brilliant record in major stakes this year. Inspiral was given a 105 Beyer Speed Figure. Warm Heart was closer to the pace than Inspiral through the first mile and led briefly before she was caught. “She had a great run,” trainer Aidan O’Brien said. “We’re over the moon. She gets the trip well.” Moira (13-1) closed from seventh to be third in the stretch. She finished third, a length behind Warm Heart. “We had a good trip,” said jockey Flavien Prat, who rode Moira. “To be honest, when I tipped her out, I thought I had a chance to win. It was a helluva run.” Win Marilyn, a 38-1 outsider from Japan, finished fourth, followed by In Italian, Lumiere Rock, With The Moonlight, Lindy, State Occasion, Didia, Fev Rover, and McKulick. In Italian set the pace in the Filly and Mare Turf, going relatively quickly early – 22.95 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 46.90 for a half-mile – before slowing to 1:12.45 for six furlongs. The six-furlong split time concerned Gosden, who thought In Italian would be too tough to catch in the final furlong. “They ran evenly,” Gosden said. “They weren’t stopping. Normally, if they go too quick they come back. She’s a mighty filly to get there.” In Italian, the 3-1 second choice, was beaten 2 1/2 lengths. Inspiral was the European champion 2-year-old filly of 2021 and 3-year-old filly of 2022 and has an excellent chance for the older filly or mare award this year. Earlier this year, Inspiral won consecutive Group 1 races at a mile in the Jacques le Marois against males at Deauville, France, in August, and the Sun Chariot Stakes against fillies and mares at Newmarket Racecourse in Britain on Oct. 7. Inspiral has won 9 of 13 starts and earned $3,639,932. Her five previous Group 1 wins had been at a mile. :: Get ready for Santa Anita racing with DRF PPs, Clocker Reports, Picks, and more. He feared Santa Anita’s short stretch, compared to European tracks, would hamper Inspiral. “Even when she came on the outside, I thought she won’t get there,” he said. “This is such a special feeling. To have a homebred filly win the Breeders’ Cup, it’s the pinnacle to have a horse like this.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
