Santa Anita Sunday, Oct. 29 Weather: Clear Temperature: 53° Track: Fast Turf: Firm ARCADIA, Calif. – Dubai World Cup winner Ushba Tesoro announced his presence here with authority Sunday while highlighting another busy morning for potential Breeders’ Cup contenders at Santa Anita that also included sharp works from last year’s Sprint and Dirt Mile winners Elite Power and Cody’s Wish. The turf course also opened during training hours for the first time leading up to the 2023 Breeders’ Cup. Ushba Tesoro did not get an official time for his work Sunday morning and even if he had, it would not have been of as much significance as the visual impression he left in the 1:50.58 it took him to go once around the one-mile oval. Dropping down on the rail at the five-furlong pole, Ushba Tesoro went off a casual opening furlong in 17.18 seconds and then picked up the pace the further he went. He was really getting serious from the quarter pole to the wire and then into and around the clubhouse turn, completing that half-mile portion of the drill in 49.50 while looking like a powerhouse the entire way. An imposing-looking sort who has shown dramatic improvement since switching from turf to dirt during the spring of his 2022 season, he gives every indication of being a major player in this year’s Classic. :: Get Breeders' Cup Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the DRF Clocker Team when you purchase a BC VIP Package! More than half the prospective lineup for the Sprint turned in their final preps Sunday, including Elite Power who worked a very sharp four furlongs in company with his Bill Mott-trained stablemate and Mile contender Casa Creed. Elite Power completed the distance in 46.74, a tick faster than his mate after starting one length back and finishing on even terms, both going very easily throughout. The old pro Casa Creed deserved plenty of props for giving the reigning sprint champion all he could handle right to the end without need of any encouragement. Others tuning up for the Sprint included Dr. Schivel, who breezed an easy half in 24.44 and 48.45 before sustaining plenty of energy on the gallop-out, completing five-eighths in 1:00.94 before easing up six panels in 1:13.94; Phoenix Stakes runner-up Nakatomi, who was pretty much in maintenance mode getting in his first work over the course, a very easy five-eighths in 1:03; American Theorem, likely the longest shot in the field, who went an easy half-mile in 48.91; and Gunite, who was in maintenance mode along with three of his stablemates here Sunday – Clairiere, Society, and Private Creed. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2023: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division Society continues to show all the right signs heading into the Filly and Mare Sprint. She was an absolute handful and then some for her rider going three furlongs under total wraps in 37.81 while full of run and wanting to do much, much more.  Trainer Bob Baffert sent out four Breeders’ Cup hopefuls for their final preps, led by Adare Manor (four furlongs in 48.29, out in 1:00.38) and National Treasure, who was very sharp breezing a half-mile in 23.61 and 47.15 while well held and kept far off the rail throughout. Prince of Monaco, one of three 2-year-olds Baffert plans to run in the Juvenile, worked four furlongs in company in 1:00.78 while sticking his head in front of a lesser-experienced and accomplished mate but while being asked a tad more to finish on the outside. Eda had her final work for the Distaff from the gate, a swift half in 47.40.  Cody’s Wish and War Like Goddess completed Mott’s morning and were the final two Breeders’ Cup workers on Sunday. Cody’s Wish has continued to impress since his arrival here just a few days earlier, going a solo half in 23.76 and 47.31 while on cruise control. He then galloped out with tons of energy, as usual, getting five-eighths in 1:00.13 and pulling up in 1:13.78.  :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Turf specialist War Like Goddess had been going in leisurely fashion over the training track the last few mornings but came over to the main track to breeze a maintenance-like half in 25.58 and 50.19 while also going out willingly around the turn in 1:03.22 for five furlongs before easing up three-quarters in 1:17.19. The turf was open but drew only one customer, Master of The Seas, a key player in the Mile who reportedly was only supposed to open gallop but wound up breezing a half-mile around the wide dogs in 25.48 and 49.28, switching leads a tad late but traveling easily throughout. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
