Santa Anita Park Saturday, October 26, 2019 Weather: Clear Track: Fast Temperature: 61 ARCADIA, Calif. – There was no shortage of action on the Breeders’ Cup workout front Saturday morning at Santa Anita, the majority of which took place in two intervals, the first in the dark immediately after the first renovation break and picking up again at 7:45 a.m. following the second break. Once again, weather conditions were perfect with the track rated fast, albeit while still somewhat on the sluggish side. The work of the day went to Shancelot, who not only sizzled four furlongs in 46.27 but did so despite fanning three to four paths wide into the stretch and finishing with jockey Martin Garcia having him under a strong hold approaching the wire.  He then proceeded to gallop out as readily as any horse thus far here this week, completing five furlongs into the turn in 58.89 before pulling up six panels in 1:12.08. Looks ready for a big effort in the Sprint. A pair of fillies, Secret Spice (Distaff) and Bellafina (Filly and Mare Sprint) gave Shancelot a run for his money when it came to the work of the day honors. Secret  Spice breezed five furlongs in 34.89, 59.69, a final time made even all the more impressive by the fact she had to angle well wide around a team of workers approaching the stretch. Secret Spice finished well within herself out near the middle of the track before continuing out six furlongs into the turn in 1:13.38. Bellafina, working solo, was also full of run from start to finish completing four furlongs in 46.50 while never asked for her best before continuing out with plenty of energy into the turn. Selcourt also showed off her abundant speed prepping for the Filly and Mare Sprint, while coming down the lane between a pair of other workers that included Bolo (Mile) completing his own work nearest the rail. Selcourt was full of run from the outset shading 35 for her opening three-eighths and was not extended while tiring some to the wire in 59.85 before easing up well behind the others on the gallop out. The first two workers of the morning were Breeders’ Cup Classic contenders Higher Power and Seeking the Soul. The former worked in company, breaking well behind stablemate Foxtail. Higher Power got within a length turning for home before readily pulling away from his overmatched and struggling partner while hard ridden from the eighth pole home. I had his final five-eighths in 35.20, 1:00.02, then out in 1:13.74 in a useful move. Seeking the Soul, working simultaneously with Higher Power, eased away from the six furlong pole before really being set down at the five-eighths marker. He completed six panels in 24.45, 47.75, 1:13.70 tiring slightly under late pressure from the sixteenth pole to the line. Other pre-dawn workers included True Valour (Mile) and Acclimate (Turf). The former, with his unmistakable turf stride, went five-eighths in 36.31, 1:00.27 while being asked along to finish before galloping out three-quarters in an average 1:14.81.  Acclimate (another grass specialist working on dirt) also went five furlongs, going in 36.45, 1:01.91 while pretty much on his own throughout. Landeskog was sharp himself on Saturday prepping for the Sprint. He was full of run throughout covering four furlongs in 23.49, 47.07 while finishing well off the rail, which is customary for most Doug O’Neill workers,  maintaining good energy going out into the turn. Ollie's Candy indicated she could be a pace factor in the Distaff after a sharp half-mile in 22.75, 46.65 during the mad rush after the second break. Giant Expectations (Dirt Mile) had a mate for a target but never could quite get even with that one, both starting and finishing about a half-length back but while going easier outside his pressured partner after five-eighths in 36.11, 1:00.78. Eddie Haskell fanned four wide leaving the turn after a 23.40 opening quarter-mile split, completed four furlongs in 47.15 while finishing out near the middle of the track. Stubbins was ridden similarly, finishing well off the rail in 24.29, 49.37 for the half but showed excellent energy into and around the turn on the gallop-out. Both horses are prepping for the Turf Sprint. Two others pointing for Breeders’ Cup grass races, Hit the Road (Juvenile Turf) and Bowies Hero (Mile) went to the training track for their final drills, and both had Flavien Prat aboard. Hit the Road was the more impressive of the two, going a super easy four furlongs in 25.09, 50.16. Bowies Hero was given a couple of stablemates for targets breaking at the half, was reserved about four lengths back most of the way, was still several lengths behind when finally roused to complete the distance in 50.09, finally catching the others midway the turn while well wide on the gallop-out. Bolo (Mile) covered five-eighths from the half in 1:01.90 with  Selcourt one of the two chasing him down the lane. He readily pulled away late from his pursuers when put to steady urging approaching the wire and to complete the drill into the turn. ► At Gulfstream Park, Math Wizard (Classic) worked five furlongs in 1:02.20, his final half in 48,40 before punctuating the drill with a big gallop-out according to track clocker Joe Savage completing six furlongs in 1:14.80 and easing up a full mile in 1:41 over a muddy track under jockey Edgard Zayas.
