ARCADIA, Calif. — Before the significant injury suffered by Geaux Rocket Ride in a workout at Santa Anita late Saturday morning, five other potential Classic starters put in workouts at four different venues for the $6 million Classic to be run Nov. 4. At Santa Anita, Clapton, the Lukas Classic winner, went a half-mile in 48.72 seconds while galloping out five furlongs in 1:01.22 and six furlongs in 1:13.50, per Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch. Missed the Cut, who could now find himself in the Classic despite being four deep on the also-eligible list after pre-entries were announced, worked five furlongs in 59.84 seconds while galloping out in 1:13.04. He finished about four lengths clear of a workmate. :: DRF Breeders' Cup Packages on sale now! The company prompted Fresu to go a little wider than planned at the top of the lane. “I’m sure we’ll end up being wide in the Breeders’ Cup anyway,” trainer Chad Summers said. “I thought it worked out well. You want to get them a feel of the track and I thought he was traveling well within himself.” Tyler Gaffalione will ride Clapton in the Classic. Missed the Cut is coming off a 5 1/2-length victory over three rivals in the Grade 3 Tokyo City Stakes going 1 1/2 miles here on Oct. 1. He is trained by John Sadler, who won last year’s Classic with the heavily favored Flightline. If Missed the Cut doesn’t run in the Classic, he is possible for the Grade 2, $250,000 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes at 1 5/8 miles on Saturday or the Grade 2 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs at Churchill Downs on Nov. 24. With King of Steel opting for the Turf and Geaux Rocket Ride out of the Classic due to injury, Missed the Cut could make it into the field provided Skippylongstocking and Dreamlike enter the Dirt Mile as their connections have expressed that they will. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2023: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said Saturday the plan is still to enter the Dirt Mile and “I don’t think we’re going to change that,” he said, though added he and his owners will wait until entry day, Monday, to make a final decision. Todd Pletcher texted that it’s "99 percent” Dreamlike goes in the Dirt Mile. No decision has yet been made regarding whether Charge It will enter the Dirt Mile or Classic. At Belmont Park Saturday, Zandon, the Grade 2 Woodward winner, worked five furlongs in 1:00.40 under a good hold from his exercise rider, according to Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Vesce. Zandon, who broke off at the half-mile pole, went in splits of 12.80, 24.40, 49.40, and out in 1:00.60 and double out in 1:15. “He went great,” trainer Chad Brown said. “Much of the same, very consistent, moving great.” At Churchill Downs, Saudi Crown went five furlongs in 59.20 seconds. Saudi Crown began his move just behind the Grade 1 winning mare A Mo Reay and finished about a length in front. Churchill Downs clockers caught Saudi Crown in splits of 12 seconds, 23.60, 35.80, 47, and had him out six furlongs 1:12.20. “I thought it was a fantastic move,” trainer Brad Cox said. “He’s all set for a big effort next week. At Keeneland, the multiple graded winner Proxy worked a half-mile in 48.40 seconds under jockey Joel Rosario. It was Proxy’s fourth work at Keeneland after breezing twice at Fair Hill, following his nose defeat to Bright Future in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. “He trained at Fair Hill last month, had some good works there, shipped into Keeneland and has done everything right since getting here,” trainer Michael Stidham said. “Haven’t missed a work, haven’t missed a day galloping, I couldn’t ask for him to be doing any better mentally and physically.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
