DEL MAR, Calif. – European turf sensation City of Troy drew post 3 and was installed as the favorite by both track linemaker Jeff Siegel, who pegged him at 5-2, and Daily Racing Form’s Brad Free, who has him at 3-1, in an overflow field of 15 entered Monday for Saturday’s $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, the richest of 14 Breeders’ Cup races run over two days at Del Mar. The field for the Classic, run at 1 1/4 miles, is limited to 14 starters. Rattle N Roll is on the also-eligible list and would need one scratch to get into the race. Regarded by trainer Aidan O’Brien as the best horse he’s ever trained, City of Troy has gone 6 for 7, with four Group 1 victories, all on turf. A 3-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Justify, City of Troy will look to give O’Brien his first victory in the Classic, a race in which he’s started 17 horses in 14 runnings. O’Brien’s Giant’s Causeway finished second to Tiznow in 2000, and his Henrythenavigator was second to Raven’s Pass in 2008. O’Brien has not started a horse in this race since 2018. Fierceness, looking to become the first Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner, to come back and win the Classic, drew post 9 and was made the second choice of Siegel (3-1) and Free (7-2). Trained by Todd Pletcher for Mike Repole, Fierceness has won the Travers and Florida Derby this year. :: Get the inside scoop from the morning workouts with Breeders' Cup Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the DRF Clocker Team The Japanese 3-year-old Forever Young, third, beaten a head, in the Kentucky Derby, drew the rail and is the third choice of both Siegel (6-1) and Free (4-1).
