After a tough trip second-place finish with Kissin In The Sand earlier in the night, driver Scott Zeron and trainer Nancy Johansson were all smiles after Captain Crunch's 1:51 3/5 win in the $600,000 Breeders Crown 2-Year-Old Colt and Gelding Pace at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono. Captain Crunch left well from post four and allowed post nine starter Blood Money (Yannick Gingras) to clear in front of him at the 26 4/5 opening quarter.  Zeron then moved back to the top between calls before he cut loose outside attacker Proof (David Miller) on the way to the 55 1/5 half. Proof and Captain Crunch stayed one-two up the backstretch, to the 1:23 2/5 three-quarters, and around the final turn, but in the lane Zeron tipped Captain Crunch to the outside of the pace-setter.  One he saw that clear air, Captain Crunch exploded, pacing by Proof and opening up to win by three lengths.  Proof did hold second, with 50-1 shot Love Me Some Lou (Corey Callahan) up for third.  No Mas Amor (Matt Kakaley) was fourth, and Blood Money wound up fifth. "He such a nice horse to drive that you can do anything you want - start him up, slow him down, start him up again," remarked Zeron.  "It worked out where I was able to leave, seat a couple horses, re-move, and then whether or not David came with Proof or not, I was content where I was." Nancy Johansson trains and 3 Brothers Stables, Christina Takter, Rojan Stables, and Caviart Farms own Captain Crunch, a Captaintreacherous-Sweet Paprika (Artiscape) colt who was bred by Walnridge Farm Inc. and Sherri Meirs and was taken out of the Standardbred Horse Sale for $85,000.  He now has a record of 5-1-1 from eight trips behind the gate, and he has pocketed $392,196.  A 9-2 shot, he paid $11.20 to win. "Obviously to win a Breeders Crown is super special," said Johansson, who won this race one event after her father, Jimmy Takter, took the Breeders Crown 3-Year-Old Colt and Gelding Trot final with Tactical Landing.  "I was a little, not upset, after Kissin In The Sand's race, but I really, really wanted her to win.  That was just an amazing effort in defeat, so for Crunch to come out and get it done, it was great.  Like Scott said, he's a pleasure to drive.  You can do whatever you want with him. Scott still had his earplugs in, and he never really even asked him to go completely.  He has a very bright future ahead of him. "He still has the Matron and the Governor's Cup, but we'll take one race at a time and see where we go from here." Although second-best on this night, trainer Brian Brown was quite pleased with Proof's mile. “I was really happy with him,” said Brown. “He raced great. He didn’t leave much, got away about fourth, and then moved to the front into about a 55 1/5 half. It caught him at the end, but Nancy’s colts have been getting really good again so it’s not a surprise they got us and I’m happy for them. But I’m really happy with my horse. “He’s eligible to the Governor’s Cup. I’ll have to run that by Adam (owner Bowden) and we’ll check and see how the horse is and make sure he’s healthy. But he seems really good right now. He’s playful and looks good. We could still go, I’m just not sure yet.”
