Each week in this space, the top Beyer performances by maiden winners will be featured and analyzed. Click here for a complete archive. Speak Easy  Jan. 27, 2nd race Gulfstream, MdSpWt70k  Beyer: 100 7 furlongs 1:21.96 – 1st by 1 3/4 lengths  b.c.3, Constitution – Fun, by Harlan’s Holiday  Noteworthy siblings: None  Auctions: None  Owner: Siena Farm and WinStar Farm  Trainer: Todd Pletcher  Breeder: WinStar Farm  A whopper of a debut figure, but one that comes with an asterisk. Yes, Speak Easy put up a fast raw time, one that was better than older stakes fillies clocked going the same seven-furlong trip in the Inside Information later on the program – emphasis on “later.” The Speak Easy maiden race went as the second on the Pegasus World Cup card and, oddly, was the only dirt race among the first eight contests. By the time the next dirt race came around, the Inside Information, nearly four hours had passed, and depending on how much the surface had been watered, and what the temperature gradient was, the track could have been considerably different. One wonders, looking at the distant fourth-place finisher’s strong 84 Beyer, if the maiden race was really quite so fast. No doubt, Speak Easy put up a strong performance as the fifth choice at odds of 8-1, quite the robust number for a first-timer at Gulfstream trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. Speak Easy broke well from post 1, was pushed down toward the rail by horses to the outside coming over, but had enough speed to avoid trouble as Ortiz quickly switched to the No. 2 path to come up and press the pacesetting favorite, Victory Avenue. Speak Easy went along comfortably enough, took the lead past the quarter pole, switched leads professionally in upper stretch, and most impressively after showing a lot of speed turned in the fastest final furlong, 12.93, among the 11 runners. He’s the second foal from a dam who won her debut before losing her 11 subsequent starts. Speak Easy figures to get a look at two turns next time, which, presumably, will help contextualize this standout speed figure. Just a Touch  Jan. 27, 2nd race Fair Grounds, MdSpWt57k  Beyer: 89  6 furlongs (sloppy/sealed) 1:10.50 –1st by 4 1/4 lengths  b.c.3, Justify – Touching Beauty, by Tapit  Noteworthy siblings: None  Auctions: Keeneland September yearling 2022 – $170,000 (RNA); Fasig-Tipton October yearling 2022 – $125,000; OBS spring 2023 2-year-old – $300,000  Owner: Qatar Racing and Marc Detampel  Trainer: Brad Cox  Breeder: Don Alberto Corp.  This colt needed some time after going through a 2-year-old breeze-up sale last spring and didn’t post his first official workout until Nov. 10, but he was breezing like a good thing at Fair Grounds through December and January and here debuted as the 1-2 favorite. That is a desperately short price on a first-time starter, though Just a Touch did his best to make it feel less than absurd. Racing over a rain-soaked dirt track, Just a Touch broke just a touch flat-footed but quickly got into gear and came up to stalk a quick early leader from second. By the half-mile pole, Just a Touch had begun edging closer to the pacesetter, already looking like a sure winner, taking the lead as early at the three-eighths pole owing to a slow middle pace. There was nothing slow about Just a Touch from the quarter pole to the wire, as he laid down a fifth furlong in a snappy 11.86 without being asked, then finished up in a field-best 12.54 as jockey Florent Geroux did no more than cock his stick. The trainer, Brad Cox, generally does not seem to encourage huge gallop-outs, and Just a Touch could have gone out longer and stronger than he did. This appeared clearly to be a case of a natural route horse with the speed and talent to win well sprinting: Just a Touch has the body type and stride cadence of a colt meant to go farther, and while he already looks big and strong, he also gave the impression of a colt who will be growing into his frame and finding himself the next couple months. Among the top few maiden winners of the Fair Grounds meet.  Speightful Lily  Jan. 27, 1st race Aqueduct, New York-bred MdSpWt70k  Beyer: 94  6 furlongs (muddy/sealed) 1:12.03 – 1st by 14 1/2 lengths  b.f.4, Union Rags – Speightful Lady, by Speightstown  Noteworthy siblings: Make Mischief (Into Mischief, foaled 2018) – multiple stakes winner, Grade 1 placed, $754K earnings  Auctions: None  Owner: Avanti Stable  Trainer: H. James Bond  Breeder: Avanti Stable  Four-year-old first-time-starting New York-breds do not typically make this list, and to further call into question the true strength of the performance, Speightful Lily debuted over a muddy, sealed surface that was playing very, very slow. That said, the filly won by more than 14 lengths, thanks in great part to a final furlong in an eye-catching 12.29, and she galloped out into a different time zone than any of her rivals. Speightful Lily debuted in blinkers and a shadow roll and seemed to want to get her head up much of the trip, especially as the rider asked her to change leads in upper stretch. She did level off nicely the final 1 1/2 furlongs and made a fine visual impression while finishing under moderate hand urging and a couple pops of the crop. Speightful Lily worked 17 times between August 2022 and March 2023, never started, then was off the work tab until Oct. 13, after which she breezed steadily into this interesting debut.
