Calvin Borel, the Hall of Fame jockey who has ridden intermittently over the past year, was arrested on Wednesday night in Hot Springs, Ark., and charged with driving while intoxicated, according to police records. Borel, 54, was booked early on Wednesday evening and released on a $1,000 bond, according to the records. Borel was in Arkansas visiting horses he owns with his wife at Pleasant Hills training center, according to a person close to the jockey. Borel could face serious repercussions for the charge, given that he was charged with driving under the influence in 2019 in southern Indiana. In Arkansas, a second-offense DWI within five years of the first results in at least seven days or up to a year in jail, though a judge can waive jail time for “good cause” and order community service instead. Borel last rode on May 21 at Churchill Downs, registering a win and a second-place finish from his two mounts. For the year, Borel has 31 mounts with four wins, with all but two of the mounts coming at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs. A three-time winner of the Kentucky Derby and a rider with a nearly legendary reputation at Churchill Downs, Borel was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013. He announced his retirement from riding in 2016, but six months later, he was back in the saddle.
