OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Bold Fortune was no match for Sacrosanct when the pair of New York-bred juveniles debuted against each other at Saratoga in August. Bold Fortune looks better prepared for the rematch in Saturday’s $500,000 Great White Way division of the New York Stallion Series at Aqueduct. The Great White Way and the $500,000 Fifth Avenue for 2-year-old fillies offer progeny of New York-based stallions their chance at potentially the biggest payday of their careers. Both races are run at seven furlongs. The Great White Way drew a field of 10, but Friend Ofthe Devil was entered back in an allowance race on Sunday and will run there. :: Bet with the Best! Sacrosanct, a son of Honest Mischief, was a pace-pressing, 3 1/4-length winner of that six-furlong maiden race on Aug. 21 while Bold Fortune finished third, beaten 6 3/4 lengths. Sacrosanct came back to win the Bertram F. Bongard at Aqueduct by 12 lengths on Sept. 22 and then took the one-mile Sleepy Hollow, also at Aqueduct, by 1 1/2 lengths on Oct. 27. “I thought at the beginning there might be some limitation on distance but he stepped up and he handled the mile,” trainer Brad Cox said. “It was a decent race, the horse who was on the lead with him [Mo Plex] is a graded stakes winner against open company. It’s positive to see that. If he takes care of business here on Saturday, we’ll try to put him on the [Kentucky] Derby trail.” Meanwhile, Bold Fortune came out of that Aug. 21 race to post dominant front-running win in a six-furlong maiden race on Sept. 22 and the New York Breeders’ Futurity at Finger Lakes on Oct. 21. This will be Bold Fortune’s first start at seven furlongs. “There’s nothing about the way he trains or anything about him that makes me think he can’t handle it,” trainer George Weaver said about the distance. “He displayed really good speed in his last two starts in his two victories. I expect him to show speed. Sacrosanct is inside of us that’s nice. … I don’t think the horse needs the lead but if he bounces out of there and wants to set it I’m not afraid of that.” If a speed duel develops, the Weaver-trained Soontobeking could be a danger from off the pace. He is coming out of four restricted stakes in which he’s finished second twice and third twice. In the Sleepy Hollow, he dropped 15 lengths off the early pace before getting beat five lengths by Sacrosanct. “I would consider him being a benefactor if the pace ends up salty on Saturday,” said Weaver, who has Javier Castellano to ride him for the first time. Trainer Danny Gargan has Man in Finance and National Identity in the field. Man in Finance was a sharp debut winner here on Sept. 21 before finishing fourth in the Notebook Stakes after chasing the early pace. National Identity, won his maiden going seven furlongs here on Nov. 2 in his second career start. Missing Rocks beat maidens going at mile in his fourth career start, at Remington Park, for trainer Steve Asmussen. This will be his first try against new York-breds. Twohonestmischief, Smilensaycheese, and Buttah complete the field. Fifth Avenue Boston’s Phinest, coming off a second to the undefeated With the Angels in the Maid of the Mist Stakes in October, could rate a slight edge in a wide-open field of 12 entered in the $500,000 Fifth Avenue division of the NYSS. Boston’s Phinest, trained by Chad Brown, won her maiden in her second start, at six furlongs, before finishing a clear second behind With the Angels in the one-mile Maid of the Mist. With the Angels, who is 4 for 4, is by Omaha Beach, a Kentucky-based sire, and thus is not eligible for this spot. “She ran great considering the horse she ran against looks like she’s the top New York-bred 2-year-old filly,” Brown said. “She meets the class level and has been doing good.” Brown will also send out the maiden Material Girl, who finished a well-beaten third behind Bernieandtherose in a New York-bred maiden race on Nov. 3. Bernieandtherose came back to win an allowance race in her next start. Stone Smuggler, trained by Jorge Abreu, was a front-running winner of the Lady Finger Stakes going 5 1/2 furlongs at Finger Lakes on Sept. 23. She was beaten 11 1/2 lengths by With the Angels in a maiden race at Saratoga and then 2 1/2 lengths by With the Angels in the six-furlong Key Cents Stakes here on Nov. 17. The seven furlongs of this race is a concern for Abreu. “I’m not sure if she wants to go that far,” Abreu said. Storm Changer was a last-to-first winner of a six-furlong maiden race here on Nov. 16. Idyll Gossip, after running sixth in the New York Breeders’ Futurity on Oct. 12, won the Shesastonecoldfox Stakes at Finger Lakes on Nov. 11. Idyll Gossip is trained by Paul Barrow, who also entered Stunning Sugar, a six-furlong maiden winner at Finger Lakes on Nov. 18. Bam’s Bliss Kiss, Mischief Lady, Blossoming Erudite, Queen Atlas, D’s a Rock, and Princess Mischief complete the field. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
