Bodemeister, a Grade 1 winner and dual classic runner-up, was named 2012 Virginia-bred Horse of the Year by the Virginia Thoroughbred Association. The now-4-year-old son of Empire Maker was among the elite sophomores of 2012, winning the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, and leading deep in the stretch of both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes before being caught both times by I’ll Have Another. In total, Bodemeister won two of six races, never finishing worse than second, for earnings of $1,304,800. Bred by Audley Farm, Bodemeister was a $260,000 purchase by owner Zayat Stables at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale. The Eclipse Award finalist, who was also named Virginia's champion 3-year-old male, now stands at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky. Bodemeister’s success was spread out among the winners of the Virginia-bred awards, including his dam, Virginia’s Broodmare of the Year Untouched Talent. The 9-year-old Storm Cat mare was a Grade 3 winner during her racing career, and produced her star offspring with her second foal. In November, Untouched Talent was sold for $5 million to the Coolmore partnership at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall selected breeding stock sale. Another winner tied to Bodemeister was the colt's breeder Audley Farm Equine, which was named Virginia’s leading breeder. Based in Berryville, Va., Audley Farm is a four-time winner of the VTA’s Breeder of the Year honors, also receiving the award in 1995, 1997, and 2002.
