ETOBICOKE, Ontario – On a card made up of low-level claimers, Friday’s pick four at Woodbine could pay handsomely because the average field size is 10.75 horses. Race 4: The biggest droppers in this $5,000 nonwinners-of-two route for fillies and mares – Holiday in Jail and Blackdiamond Dinny – may have the best chance. Holiday in Jail is dropping off a cliff from an Ontario-sired/$40,000 sprint where she finished a sagging seventh after a four-wide trip. Going back five years, trainer Robert Tiller has a 21 percent strike rate with horses descending at least 50 percent in class, with a return on investment of $2.63. Blackdiamond Dinny is competing on short rest off a prominent fifth over an anti-speed track against $15,000 claimers. She was good enough to trounce $25,000 maidens with a 76 Beyer Speed Figure in July, but inconsistency has been her hallmark. Trainer Catherine Day Phillips has won at an impressive 30 percent clip with runners getting at least 50 percent class relief in the last five years, with an ROI of $3.09. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! The durable 9-year-old rallied for third in each of his last two outings against $7,500 claimers on the Tapeta and in a tough starter/optional claimer on the inner turf. Desolator is a standout in the field on recent Beyers, having gotten a 75 and a 70 in his last two races. Sahin Civaci retains the mount and the meet’s runaway leading rider is 29 for 114 for second-leading trainer Marty Drexler, who has good turf to synthetic numbers. Race 6: One could pare this 1 1/16-mile race down to Classy Whisper, Native Prince, Jay Bird, and Green Fleet. All but Jay Bird are dropping into the race, which is for $5,000 non-winners of three or non-winners in the past year. Classy Whisper merits top billing off back-to-back fourths against starter/optional-claiming opposition where he exceeded the Beyer par of 68 for this level. Native Prince had a very wide trip when sixth over an inside-biased track while returning from a layoff in a seven-furlong sprint Oct. 25. That tightener should set him up nicely for this longer trip. Jay Bird was blocked twice in the stretch when probably best while descending to this level off a claim Nov. 1. Like the others, Green Fleet is seeking his first victory of the meet. The 8-year-old has been an in-and-outer, and this will be a peak race if the pattern continues. Race 7: Stretch Pass dusted Seattle Stinger when they ran one-two against $10,000 maidens Oct. 18. Stretch Pass folded after pressing a fast pace when moving up to this $10,000 non-two class Nov. 1, but don’t be surprised if he rebounds in his second try under Rafael Hernandez. Seattle Stinger is coming off a troubled maiden triumph under Civaci. Trainer Carlos Grant is 2 for 10 with runners exiting a maiden victory over the last five years. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
