ARCADIA, Calif. – Pick six carryovers are back in style at Santa Anita. For a second straight Friday, the track begins a race week with a carryover to spice things up. Bettors are expected to wager more than $500,000 into the Friday pick six, chasing $100,819 already in the pool. The $2 pick six on races 5-10 includes three dirt sprints, two turf routes, and a hillside turf sprint with only one speed horse – Lovely Idaho in race 8. Navigating the pick six is never easy, though some races are less difficult than others. It starts with a dubious program favorite. Race 5: Speed wins six-furlong dirt races at Santa Anita, right? Not lately. The past three weeks, only 1 of 15 races at the distance was won by the pacesetter; eight races at the distance were won from the back half of the field. The track profile does not benefit Mutt Dillin. A front-runner listed as the 2-1 favorite in this $32,000 maiden-claiming sprint, Mutt Dillin is expected to set the pace. If he reproduces his most recent start, runner-up at 5 1/2 furlongs, he could be gone. But the additional half-furlong does him no favors. Mutt Dillin lost ground late in all six starts. :: Santa Anita Clocker Reports are available every race day. Access now. Unbreakable Trust drops to his lowest level and should vie for favoritism based on speed figures that rank among the highest in the field. His closing style suits the racetrack. El Ondeado has run fast enough for this class, while comebacker Naval Harbor ran better than looks in his debut last June at Golden Gate Fields. Code Breaker will rally late. Ultimately, the race is a pick six spread. Race 6: Before he starts overwhelming favorite Wound Up in race 9, trainer Librado Barocio starts a longshot bomb in this nonwinners-of-three starter-allowance turf route. Annie’s Joy stretches from a sprint to a route and adds blinkers. Strategy is obvious. “They’re going to have to catch her to win the race,” Barocio said. “She’ll be on that lead; she’s a horse that likes to free run.” Annie’s Joy, whose odds are likely to be much lower than her curious 30-1 morning line, is one of many contenders. Program favorite Roselee May looked good winning a nonwinners-of-two starter last out, Speed Lane drops from entry-level allowance, and Ms McWhinney will rally late. Race 7: Thorne House is listed as the program favorite in this second-level allowance/optional-claiming sprint, but he is not the most probable winner. Elwood Blues makes his first start for trainer Mark Glatt, who claimed him in a three-way shake from a runner-up finish for $80,000. “He was a fresh horse, he had good form, and just kind of felt like he would be at least tough at the level we claimed him, and potentially even better,” Glatt noted. Elwood Blues, 3 for 7, has earned the highest figures, and his tactical speed should lead to a cozy trip right behind the pace. As for Thorne House, the inside post is a challenge for an honest gelding scheduled to make his first start since last summer. He is working well, according to trainer Dean Pederson, but the race on Friday is only a comeback. Get Her Number returns from a 19-month layoff as a first-time gelding. Book Smart and Kingdom Heart are expected to duel for the lead. Race 8: Lovely Idaho wired California-bred maidens at six furlongs on the main turf oval in her comeback last out, and she catches a paceless field for her first against winners. Lovely Idaho looks like the lone speed in this 6 1/2-furlong hillside turf sprint for California-bred fillies and mares. “She should clear, she should be very tough,” trainer Mike Puype said. “There’s always the possibility of a reaction from a big race off a layoff, but she’s doing really good. I don’t think the distance will be a problem.” Speed, however, has not been an asset this season on the hill. Only three of the 14 hillside races were won by the pacesetter. Nonetheless, the scenario is advantageous for Lovely Idaho. Her main rivals include Elegant Sway, Sharp Ride, and longshot comebacker Blevys Tiger. Race 9: Wound Up will be a popular pick six single after four successive wins, including three since he was claimed by Barocio. He earned a 99 Beyer Speed Figure last out, a figure that would crush this 5 1/2-furlong allowance restricted to Northern California horses/horsemen. “I’m hoping he continues to improve, blossom, and get better,” Barocio said. “He’s showing all indicators that he is.” Wound Up, the 3-2 program favorite, must put away front-running dropper Regal Patriot to win the sprint. Race 10: California-bred 3-year-olds run a mile on turf in this entry-level allowance. No Poking Around finished second at this level last out, Check’s On the Way stretches back out and will contest the pace, while program favorite Got Soul wired maidens last out but does not figure for the same easy trip in a race with more speed. It’s a Factor is a contender notwithstanding another bizarre Santa Anita morning line. It’s a Factor is listed at 30-1, but is likely to be significantly shorter. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
