Though they all won’t run, on Monday as many as 13 3-year-olds remained under consideration for the $2 million Belmont Stakes on June 8 at Saratoga. Sierra Leone, the Kentucky Derby runner-up, looms the probable favorite in the race even if both Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness runner-up Mystik Dan and Preakness winner Seize the Grey enter the race. While Seize the Grey is confirmed to start, a decision on whether Mystik Dan will run likely won’t be made until over the weekend after the horse works, trainer Kenny McPeek said Monday. “He’s doing rock solid,” McPeek said Monday. “He’s been a very easy horse to train. He keeps eating up every day, [I] feel pretty good. I want to see him work, see how well he works.” McPeek said if he doesn’t run Mystik Dan in the Belmont, then the most likely race he would target is the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on July 20. “Ultimately, you’d like to make sure he’s right and ready for the Travers,” McPeek said of the Grade 1, $1.25 million race for 3-year-olds at Saratoga on Aug. 27. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Thorpedo Anna, winner of the Kentucky Oaks, would have to be supplemented to the Belmont for a fee of $50,000, but it is being considered. McPeek would not run both horses in the race. If Mystik Dan runs in the Belmont, Thorpedo Anna would run in the Grade 1, $500,000 Acorn at 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga on June 7. “She’s doing great,” McPeek said. Seize the Grey is likely to work later this week at Churchill Downs before shipping to Saratoga over the weekend. He might have a short blowout the week of the Belmont. Trainer Todd Pletcher has as many as four horses under consideration for the Belmont: Fierceness, the 2-year-old champion of 2023 who finished 15th in the Kentucky Derby; Antiquarian, who won the Grade 3 Peter Pan; the unbeaten but untested Mindframe; and the maiden Protective. Mindframe is also being mentioned for the Pegasus on June 15 at Monmouth while Protective, third in the Wood Memorial and Peter Pan, still has the maiden option. Other confirmed starters include Dornoch, the Fountain of Youth winner who finished 10th in the Kentucky Derby, and Honor Marie, the Louisiana Derby runner-up who finished eighth in the Kentucky Derby. Among the bevy of possible starters is Batten Down, an 8 3/4-length maiden winner at Churchill on April 30, who is also being considered for Ohio Derby on June 22, trainer Bill Mott said. On Monday at Saratoga, Batten Down worked five furlongs in 1:00.99, according to Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch. Going in company with the older multiple winner Arthur’s Ride, Batten Down, under Junior Alvarado, went in splits of 24.81 seconds, 36.80, and galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.99 and seven furlongs in 1:28.60, per Welsch. “He had a nice work,” Mott said. “Couldn’t have gone better. Junior was pleased with him. So, we decide where to go, I don’t know. We’ve got to figure it out.” Mott’s 3-year-old Resilience worked a half-mile in 50.45 on Monday in Saratoga, his first workout since he finished sixth in the Kentucky Derby. Resilience, who won the Grade 2 Wood Memorial, is not expected to run in the Belmont, and where his next start will come is undetermined. Mott does not think Resilience excels at 1 1/4 miles. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  “I thought that was pretty clear the other day, he had a shot. He came off the turn, he looked like he could win, and he wasn’t able to finish it off,” Mott said. The Wine Steward, runner-up in the Lexington Stakes and Peter Pan, is being considered for the Belmont or perhaps the Grade 1, $500,000 Woody Stephens at seven furlongs. The post position draw for the Belmont Stakes and the Grade 1, $1 million Metropolitan Handicap will be held Monday. The remainder of the card is being drawn on Sunday. – additional reporting by Mike Welsch :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
