Jersey Town, last year’s Grade 1 Cigar Mile winner, worked five furlongs in 1:01.74 on Friday morning over the Belmont main track. He shaded 24 seconds in his final quarter, according to Robin Smullen, assistant to trainer Barclay Tagg. “It was a nice overall work,” Smullen said. “The track was heavy. He’s fit now, we’re just looking for maintenance works right now. We shouldn’t need another speedy work.” Jersey Town has run three times this year, finishing second in the Teddy Drone at Monmouth, second in the Grade 1 Forego at Saratoga, and, most recently, third, 11 lengths behind at Uncle Mo, in the Kelso. Cornelio Velasquez will ride Jersey Town in the Dirt Mile.
