SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Trainer Rudy Rodriguez admitted he wasn’t surprised Bella Sofia was able to come out of the allowance ranks to win Saturday’s Grade 1 Test Stakes.  He did admit he was pleasantly surprised the way she did it, in dominant fashion, by 4 1/4 widening lengths over a field that included a trio of last-out graded stakes winners in a performance for which the still lightly raced 3-year-old filly received a career-best 101 Beyer Speed Figure. Rodriguez said Bella Sofia, who sandwiched a pair of one-sided victories around a game second-place finish in the Jersey Girl to launch her career, appeared to be in excellent shape the morning after the race. “It looks like she came out a little tired, but overall very good,” Rodriguez said. “We put her out in the round pen this morning and she seemed very happy with herself. Then she went back to her stall and just lied down looking very relaxed.” Rodriguez said everything went in Bella Sofia’s favor both coming into and during the running of the seven-furlong Test. “We brought her over here (main track) to work, there was no doubt she was doing very good going into the race, and I was really glad she finally drew an outside post after having been down near the inside in her first three starts,” Rodriguez said. “And then to see her rate like she did yesterday for Luis (Saez) was great. It was a perfect trip.”       Rodriguez said he and his owners will wait a few days before deciding what might be next for Bella Sofia, who was purchased for a bargain $20,000 as a 2-year-old at the 2020 OBS Sales. “Bodywise, it looks like this is what she wants to do,” Rodriguez noted when asked if he thought Bella Sofia might stretch beyond seven furlongs down the road. “But we have plenty of time to figure that out. We’ll enjoy the win for now, give her a few days to see how she’s doing and then figure out a plan while leaving everything open at the moment. She’s a very nice filly and deserves for us to give her the best shot we can.” Trainer Mark Casse reported his Test runner-up Souper Sensational also exited the race in good order.  Souper Sensational finished a clear second while never menacing the winner, turning in her second big effort in a row following an impressive victory in the Grade 3 Victory Ride in her previous start. “She ran good, the other filly freaked, any other day we might have won,” Casse said. “When you look at it, we beat a lot of very good fillies. A lot of proven fillies. Who would have thought the one who’d beat us would have only started a few times?” Casse said turning Souper Sensational back to sprints after a series of two-turn races earlier in the year has made the difference in her recent form. “She had a really bad trip in the Eight Belles and she’s been pretty solid ever since,” Casse said. “I’m thinking if she runs another huge race I might try the Breeders’ Cup (Filly and Mare Sprint). I really haven’t thought about what to do with her before that. She’s been going long and hard. I want to see how she’s doing before thinking about that.” :: DRF's Saratoga headquarters – Stakes schedule, previews, recaps, past performances, and more While Rodriguez won’t bring Bella Sofia back to the races any time soon, he is considering wheeling Danny California back on just three days' rest in Wednesday’s $100,000 Evan Shipman Handicap.  Danny California ran arguably the best race of his career in his 39th start when rallying to defeat open, second-level allowance and optional claiming company in Saturday’s 11th event, earning a 96 Beyer Speed Figure in the process. “The race yesterday (Saturday) was the one I’ve been pointing for even though I entered him in the stakes on Wednesday before he ran,” Rodriguez said. “As of this morning (Sunday) he is doing very well, he ate up everything last night and seems bright and happy. I told the boss (owner Michael Dubb) now that he won this last race, it’s his call. At the moment I’d say there is probably a 75-25 chance he will run on Wednesday.” Only five horses including Danny California were entered for the 1 1/8-mile Evan Shipman, a group that includes Mr. Buff, who dominated this race in 2019, Sea Foam, Three Jokers, and Winston’s Chance.
