Friday's late pick four sequence begins with Race 8 and involves three graded stakes races – the Grade 2 True North for older sprinters; the Grade 2 New York, for older fillies and mares going long on turf; and the Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup, for older horses going even longer on turf. Let's take a look. Race 8: The True North goes with a field of of 10 and it is a very strong race. The horse to reckon with first is #3 Catalina Cruiser, making his first start of the year following a no-show effort as the favorite in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and then a 216-day layoff. He earned some gaudy Beyer Speed Figures while winning the first four starts of his career, but it's not like he doesn't still have much to prove. It would be no surprise to find him in the winner's circle when all is said on done on Friday but he is a defensive use, at best, in my opinion. The horses I will be using on the main ticket are the two exiting the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Sprint on Derby Day – #7 Whitmore and #8 Do Share. And I also want to cover the up-and-coming #4 Nicodemus. A: 7, 8 B:  4 C:  3 Race 9: The New York has pulled some of the top horses in this division – at least as things stand right now – but the race appears to go straight through Chad Brown's #8 Homerique. Homerique appeared to have excuses lined up leading into her stateside debut in the Grade 3 Beaugay last month – first start off the layoff, distance short of her best, interrupted work schedule – and then the gates opened and she was trailing a slow pace around to the top of the stretch. None of it mattered, as Homerique moved clear and flew down the outside of the inner turf course to win as the favorite. She is the only A in this race as she stretches back out in distance for her second start of the year. Morning line favorite, #6 Arklow, has never been this far, so there is automatically reason to question how short a price you want to take on him. If he handles it he will be hard to beat, but I have to use others.  Two shippers without distance issues to confront are #8 Raa Atoll and #3 Amade.  Raa Atoll won his 2019 debut in Germany over this two-mile trip in Group 2 company. Considering his overall solid form in England last year as a 3-year-old, he would seem to be a main contender in this race. Amade doesn't have the class that his main rivals in this race possess but he is a true stayer and will relish this trip. American-based runners #4 Red Knight (a winner over this distance two starts back) and #9 Canessar (second in this race last year vs. a better field) are also contenders. A:  3, 6, 8 B:  4, 9 Race 11:  Eleven fillies and mares will sprint six furlongs on turf to close out the sequence.  I prefer #3 Funny Money Honey and #4 Ragtime Suzy and I would be happy to get alive to the two of them. Funny Money Honey made her turf debut in her second career start and to say she handled the surface change would be an understatement. She is going to be tough to beat if just repeating that effort on Friday. Ragtime Suzy is 0 for 5 on turf in her career, but she handles this surface just fine and she looks like a nice fit in this spot as she returns to try the grass for the first time since last May.
