ARCADIA, Calif. – Led by Higher Power and Seeking the Soul, both of whom were prepping for the Classic, 16 horses who are scheduled to compete in the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita next Friday and Saturday turned in their final works here on spectacularly clear Saturday morning. Higher Power and Seeking the Soul both came out right after the first renovation break, just before sunrise, and both worked six furlongs. They are among 11 horses who were pre-entered in the Classic last Wednesday, and all 11 are expected to be entered on Monday, when final entries are due and posts are drawn for all 14 Breeders’ Cup races. Seeking the Soul, working on his own for trainer Dallas Stewart, was timed by Daily Racing Form’s Mike Welsch in 1:13.70. Moments later, Higher Power, working in company, was caught by track clockers going six furlongs in 1:12.60 with jockey Flavien Prat aboard. Higher Power started off several lengths behind his workmate and drew clear late, then was under an aggressive ride to gallop out seven furlongs. His time was the fastest six furlongs of the five at the distance Saturday. “I wanted a good six furlongs today,” said his trainer, John Sadler, who said he had him going out seven furlongs in 1:26. “The track is slow. The fast day was Tuesday. I thought this was a good work today.” Prat had a busy morning. After the second renovation break, he hopped aboard Bellafina for trainer Simon Callaghan and sent her through a half-mile drill that Welsch had in 46.50 seconds. She is scheduled to go in the Filly and Mare Sprint, as is Selcourt, who had the fastest time of 39 at five furlongs Saturday when speeding through her work in 59.60 seconds for Sadler. Bellafina and Selcourt were part of a frenetic few minutes after the second break, with several horses working at the same time, but despite the commotion the talent of Sprint candidate Shancelot stood out. Going through a half-mile work well within himself for trainer Jorge Navarro, Welsch timed him in 46.27 seconds. Track clockers had him in 46.40 seconds, the fastest time of 69 at the distance. Landeskog, also ticketed to the Sprint, was timed by track clockers in 47 seconds for his half-mile work for trainer Doug O’Neill. For the Distaff, Ollie’s Candy went a half-mile for Sadler in 46.65 seconds on Welsch’s watch, and Welsch had Secret Spice going five furlongs in 59.69 seconds for trainer Richard Baltas. Giant Expectations, who is running in the Dirt Mile, worked five furlongs on Welsch’s watch in 1:00.78 for trainer Peter Eurton. Two top candidates for the Turf Sprint worked four furlongs. Welsch had pro-tem favorite Eddie Haskell in 47.15 seconds for Mark Glatt, and Stubbins in 49.37 seconds for O’Neill. Bolo, trained by Carla Gaines, and True Valour, trained by Callaghan, both tuned up for the Mile grass race with five-furlong works that track clockers caught in 1:02.40 and 1:01.40, respectively. Acclimate, a longshot in the Turf, was timed by track clockers in 1:01.20 for five furlongs for trainer Phil D’Amato. On the training track, D’Amato sent his Mile candidate, Bowies Hero, out for a half-mile work that Welsch had in 50.09 seconds. Hit the Road, scheduled for the Juvenile Turf on Friday for Dan Blacker, also worked a half-mile on the training track, with Welsch getting him in 50.16 seconds. Riding assignments finalized for Juvenile Fillies A few riding assignments for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on Friday finally were confirmed on Saturday. Joel Rosario will retain the mount on Wicked Whisper, whom he rode to victory in the Frizette, trainer Steve Asmussen said. Abel Cedillo, who had his choice of two Doug O’Neill runners, opted for Chandelier runner-up Comical. O’Neill said that Rafael Bejarano would pick up the mount on Lazy Daisy, the Pocahontas winner.
