ARCADIA, Calif. - Trainer Bob Baffert’s four winners at Santa Anita on Saturday were a mix of 3-year-olds and older horses that could race at the highest level in the not-too-distant future. Baffert’s success began when Rodriguez led throughout a one-mile maiden race for 3-year-olds in the second race and continued when the highly regarded Barnes and Romanesque finished first and second in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs. Later in the day, Mirahmadi led throughout an allowance race at a mile for older horses, and Richi and Pleasant finished first and second for the stable in the Grade 3 Las Flores Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs. For Baffert, the four-win day was his most victories on a single program since he won four races at Los Alamitos in September 2023. He won five races on a program at Santa Anita on Dec. 26, 2022, including three stakes. “I had a good chance to win four and I won four and it worked out,” Baffert said on Sunday morning. “Sometimes, I’ve had a chance to win four and I won one. “The horses showed up and the riders rode good races. They were prepared well. I’ve got good people working for me and I’ve got a strong clientele team.” :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Barnes and Rodriguez will be closely scrutinized in coming weeks as the build-up to the Triple Crown intensifies. Barnes, owned by Amr Zedan, disputed the pace throughout the $200,000 San Vicente Stakes, drawing away in the final furlong to win by 5 1/2 lengths. Purchased for $3.2 million as a yearling at Saratoga in 2023, Barnes won his debut in a maiden race at 5 1/2 furlongs at Churchill Downs on Nov. 27. Rodriguez, a $485,000 yearling purchase, won his second start on Saturday. He was second to Romanesque in a maiden race at 6 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar on Nov. 23. His 101 Beyer Speed Figure for the maiden win is the highest recorded by a member of the current 3-year-old crop. Baffert was non-committal about plans for the 3-year-olds on Sunday. “It’s how they come out of it and how they’re training,” Baffert said. “We’ll have to separate them. They’ll all be nominated everywhere.” The stable has incredible depth in the division. Citizen Bull, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar in November, is a candidate for the Grade 3 Robert Lewis Stakes, a $200,000 race at a mile at Santa Anita on Feb. 1. Citizen Bull is a finalist for the Eclipse Award as the nation’s outstanding 2-year-old male of 2024. Gaming, second in the BC Juvenile and a finalist for the Eclipse Award for 2-year-olds males, is scheduled to start in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes, a $1 million race at a mile at Oaklawn Park on Jan. 25. Richi is a candidate for the Grade 1 Beholder Mile, a $300,000 race for fillies and mares on March 8. The Beholder Mile is the richest dirt race for fillies and mares in California in the first half of the year. “Hopefully, we’ll have more than one in there,” Baffert said. Richi races for Hill ‘n’ Dale Equine Holdings and Stud Vendaval. She was second in the Desert Stormer Stakes at six furlongs at Santa Anita last June in her lone start of 2024 and her American debut. In Chile earlier in her career, Richi was a five-time stakes winner, including Group 1 races at about 7 1/2 furlongs and 1 1/4 miles in 2023. Mirahmadi, named for Santa Anita track announcer Frank Mirahmadi, won for the second time in his last three starts on Saturday. He won a maiden race by 10 lengths at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita from the front in his eighth career start on Oct. 12. Mirahmadi was last of six in the Grade 3 Native Diver Stakes at 1 1/8 miles at Del Mar on Nov. 23 in between the wins. Baffert said on Sunday that the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap at 1 1/4 miles on March 1 is a goal with the 4-year-old Mirahmadi. “I knew he was a good horse,” Baffert said. “He’s immature and we’re figuring it out. “A lot of horses you’ve got to figure them out. The last race was a complete disaster. At the start, he broke slowly. He has to be aggressively ridden away from there to get going. “I think we’ll figure him out.” Mirahmadi (2-1) finished 4 1/2 lengths in front of 4-5 Eagles Flight, a half-brother to 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline. A 4-year-old colt, Eagles Flight started at a mile for the first time on Saturday in his second start. He was the easy winner of a maiden race at six furlongs at Santa Anita last May. “It was a good effort first-time (at a mile) on a speed-favoring track,” trainer John Sadler said. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
