Bob Baffert is likely to secure a seventh victory in the Desi Arnaz Stakes for 2-year-old fillies Saturday at Del Mar as he trains four of the five entered including a probable favorite expected to set the pace. “Silent Law is the quickest of all of them; she’s fast,” Baffert said. A 2-for-2 stakes winner, Silent Law is the speed of the seven-furlong, $100,000 Desi Arnaz. And if Silent Law does not get it done, a stablemate probably will. Baffert also entered Mawu, an impressive debut winner; Two Bar, who crushed a restricted maiden race; and Tenma, who won the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante before finishing third in the Grade 2 Oak Leaf Stakes at Santa Anita. Tenma is not a confirmed starter in the Desi Arnaz. “I don’t know if I’m going to run her or not. I’m actually pointing her to the Starlet,” Baffert said midweek, referring to the Grade 2 Starlet, a 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-old fillies Dec. 7 at Los Alamitos. Tenma drew the rail Saturday. Blinkers will be removed wherever she runs next. The Starlet will not include one of Baffert’s top fillies. Non Compliant, winner of the Grade 2 Oak Leaf Stakes at Santa Anita, subsequently was scratched from the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and is on the shelf. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports “We’re going to kick her out, freshen her up for 60 days, and bring her back [in winter],” Baffert said. The future is now for Baffert’s runners in the Desi Arnaz. “This race is usually a prep for the Starlet,” Baffert noted. His last four Desi Arnaz winners – Nothing Like You, Eda, Chasing Yesterday, Dream Tree – stretched out and won the Starlet in their next start. Although it is uncertain how far Silent Law wants to run, there is no doubt about her speed. Juan Hernandez rides Silent Law, who won her debut by 10 lengths at Los Alamitos and the six-furlong Anoakia at Santa Anita by more than three. Anoakia runner-up Practical Dream, trained by Tim Yakteen, is the only Desi Arnaz entrant not trained by Baffert. Antonio Fresu rides Practical Dream. Mawu scratched from the Anoakia, in which she would have been wheeling back in 19 days. “I think she’ll be better going two turns,” Baffert said. “At least we’ll get a race into them. A one-other-than is not going to fill, so this is what we have.” Kazushi Kimura rides Mawu. Two Bar dominated a restricted maiden race last out at Santa Anita, winning by more than seven lengths with a modest 64 Beyer. Tiago Pereira rides Two Bar. The wagering appeal of the Desi Arnaz is minimal, and the race is positioned as race 2 on the card. The defection of Tenma would leave four runners. Average field size for the nine editions of the Desi Arnaz at Del Mar is 5.1. The race was canceled in 2016. While Baffert 2-year-old fillies are featured Saturday, the trainer will have at least one starter Sunday in the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes for 2-year-olds of either gender. Runaway maiden winner Kalea Bay is likely for the seven-furlong Bob Hope, which Baffert has won seven of the last nine years. Baffert also nominated Emerald Bay and unraced Madaket Road. Baffert’s top 2-year-old colts, BC Juvenile one-two finishers Citizen Bull and Gaming, are in light training. “They look good, they’re training, going easy with them right now,” Baffert said. “I want them good for the spring stuff.” :: Bet with the Best! Baffert said Citizen Bull will not start again this year, Gaming is “possible” for the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity on Dec. 14. In other news regarding Baffert 2-year-olds, one of his most expensive acquisitions finally has a name. Sired by Into Mischief, purchased for $3.2 million by Amr Zedan at the 2023 Saratoga yearling sale, he was named for Baffert’s longtime assistant Jimmy Barnes. The colt Barnes smoked a bullet 58 from the Santa Anita gate Nov. 9 and is nearing his debut. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
