The days of Mr Brightside winning important stakes in Australia at massive odds has vanished. Mr Brightside will be even-money to win his third consecutive group stakes in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes at a mile at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Friday. Mr Brightside paid $69.30 in American pools when won the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap against 19 rivals on April 2. The one-mile race was worth $2.24 million and is Mr Brightside’s richest win in 14 starts. After a four-month layoff, Mr Brightside won the Group 2 Lawrence Stakes at seven furlongs at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne on Aug. 13. The $338,700 Feehan Stakes is the second race of a late-year campaign for Mr Brightside, an eight-time winner trained by Ben and J.D. Hayes. :: Get free past performances, analysis, and picks for Australian racing The Feehan drew only six entrants, a smaller field than most Australian group stakes. Mr Brightside, who will be ridden by regular rider Craig Williams, will be at the back of the field early. Mr Brightside won his only start at Moonee Valley, a one-mile handicap last September on the same program as the Feehan. Course experience is important at Moonee Valley, which has a stretch run of approximately 190 yards, less than a furlong and the shortest in Australia. The Feehan is the first start at Moonee Valley for the recent Irish import Earlswood and the prolific 5-year-old mare Inspirational Girl. Earlswood was fourth in the Group 1 Irish Derby in June 2021 and won the Group 3 Royal Whip Stakes at 1 1/4 miles in Ireland last August for trainer John Murtagh. Now trained by Maddie Raymond, Earlswood won his lone start in Australia in the Group 3 Cyclon Cup at a mile at Caulfield in February. Earlswood stalked the pace in that race, which could be a favorable style at Moonee Valley with the short stretch. Inspirational Girl, a winner of 10 of 17 starts, has not raced since she finished 14th in the Doncaster. A closer, Inspirational Girl is a three-time stakes winner at distances of seven furlongs to a mile. Moonee Valley has a nine-race program that includes four stakes. First post time is 10:30 p.m. Eastern or 7:30 p.m. Pacific on Friday. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
