From Argentina by way of Hong Kong, the 7-year-old gelding He Runs Away has found a new home this year with top trainer Chris Waller in Australia. Even though He Runs Away is winless in four starts for Waller since mid-March, there are signs the well-traveled runner can win for the first time for the stable in a handicap at about 1 5/16 miles on Wednesday at Warwick Farm Racecourse. He Runs Away was a two-time Group 1 winner in Argentina in the fall of 2016 and was seventh behind Thunder Snow in the Group 3 United Arab Emirates Derby at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai in 2017. Thunder Snow later won the Dubai World Cup in 2018 and 2019. He Runs Away was sent to Hong Kong in 2017 and was winless in 14 starts on that circuit from late 2017 to early 2019. In Australia, He Runs Away was eighth, 14th, and eighth in three starts at distances ranging from 7 3/4 furlongs to 1 3/16 miles from mid-March to mid-April before losing by a short head in a handicap at 1 1/2 miles on April 29 at Warwick Farm. The narrow loss extended He Runs Away’s losing streak to 20 races, but it was an encouraging performance nonetheless. For Wednesday’s race, jockey Brenton Avdulla retains the mount, having ridden the gelding for the first time April 29. He Runs Away will carry 129 pounds, slightly less than joint highweights Invasion Day, Lady Cuvee, and Poulton Le Sands, who will carry 131. Invasion Day, a two-time winner in England and Ireland in the last two years, was seventh in his Australian debut in a handicap at about 7 3/4 furlongs on April 25 at Canterbury Park. :: Get free past performances, analysis, and picks for Australian racing Lady Cuvee, trained by Waller, is one of two 4-year-old fillies in the field of 12. She is winless in 11 starts since a handicap at 7 1/2 furlongs at Kembla Grange in April 2019. Poulton Le Sands, a winner of 5 of 17 starts, was ninth in a handicap at 1 1/4 miles on April 25 at Rosehill Gardens. He Runs Away typically runs from a stalking position and is likely to be in pursuit of Tampering, a 3-year-old Southern Hemisphere gelding who has won his last three starts. Tampering will carry 131 pounds and starts in the longest race of his career Wednesday. First post time at Warwick Farm is 10:50 p.m. Eastern, or 7:50 p.m. Pacific, on Tuesday.
