Rivellino, unbeaten in three starts, including two stakes, may be overlooked in a wide-open running of the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes for Southern Hemisphere 2-year-olds at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney, Australia, on Friday evening. In a full field of 16, Rivellino was 10-1 in early betting on Wednesday. Tempted and Wodeton, both from leading stables, were 9-2 co-favorites, ahead of 7-1 Skyhook. The post position draw for the Golden Slipper, worth $3.16 million and the world’s richest race for 2-year-olds, was not kind to Tempted and Wodeton, who start from the inside two berths. Both have run from off the pace in their brief careers, making a clean trip vital. Rivellino, trained by Kris Lees, is in slightly better shape in post 3, and is also a closer. He won his stakes debut in the $1.26 million Millennium Stakes, a sales progeny race at 5 1/2 furlongs at Royal Randwick Racecourse on Feb. 8, and followed with a head win in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes at six furlongs at Randwick on March 1. :: Get free past performances, analysis, and picks for Australian racing Skyhook was second in the Skyline. Jockey Hugh Bowman, based in Hong Kong, will ride Rivellino for the first time. Tempted, one of five fillies in the Golden Slipper field, won the Group 2 Riesling Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at six furlongs at Randwick on March 8 for her first stakes win in her fourth start. Trained by James Cummings, Tempted closed from 10th of 11 to win by slightly more than a neck. Wodeton, a colt trained by Chris Waller, was second in the Group 2 Todman Stakes at six furlongs at Randwick on March 8, losing by three-quarters of a length after leading in the stretch. He will be ridden by James McDonald, a booking certain to draw support. The Golden Slipper is one of five Group 1 races on a 10-race program at Rosehill Gardens that begins at 9:30 a.m. Eastern or 6:30 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com. Earlier on the program, Full Count Felicia, winner of the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes at Woodbine last September, is rated as an outsider for the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes at 1 1/4 miles, her Australian debut. Unraced since a seventh-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Del Mar last November, Full Count Felicia is trained by Waller, who also starts the star mare Via Sistina in the $632,800 Ranvet. Broadsiding, the Australian champion 2-year-old of 2023-2024, will be heavily backed to win his fourth Group 1 in the $474,600 Rosehill Guineas for Southern Hemisphere 3-year-olds at 1 1/4 miles. Trained by Cummings, Broadsiding was second by a half-length in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas at a mile on March 8. The popular 6-year-old mare Fangirl will be favored to win the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes at 7 1/2 furlongs against males, while Private Harry, undefeated in four starts, has his Group 1 debut in the $634,200 Galaxy Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
