Princess Grace was a five-time graded stakes winner for trainer Mike Stidham from 2020 to 2022 in California, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, so successful that she earned more than $1.44 million. Princess Grace was winless in three Grade 1 races for fillies and mares on turf – the Matriarch Stakes at Del Mar in 2021, a second in the Beverly D Stakes at Churchill Downs last August and a third in the First Lady Stakes at Keeneland last October. Sold for $1.7 million last November in Kentucky, Princess Grace now races in Australia where she will have her Group 1 debut in the $640,300 Winx Stakes at a mile at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney on Friday evening. :: Get free past performances, analysis, and picks for Australian racing A victory will not be easy in a field of 16 that includes a staggering 13 Group 1 winners. Princess Grace has started twice in Australia, finishing third in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes at six furlongs at Randwick April 8 and winning the Group 3 Hawkesbury Crown Stakes for fillies and mares at 6 1/2 furlongs at Hawkesbury Racecourse two weeks later. In advance of the Winx Stakes, Princess Grace has finished second of seven and last of five in two schooling races from the gate, or barrier trials, at 4 1/2 furlongs since the first of the month. The Winx Stakes is so wide-open that the 9-year-old gelding Zaa’ki and 5-year-old mare Fangirl were the co-favorites at 4-1 as of Thursday. Princess Grace was 15-1, a price that easily catches the eye. Zaaki has not raced since he finished seventh of 12 at 6-5 in the Group 1 Doomben Cup at 1 1/4 miles at Doomben Racecourse May 20. He has won multiple times in his career after a layoff. He won the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes at 1 1/8 miles in early May. Fangirl was seventh of 20 in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile, a handicap at Randwick April 1 that is always one of the most intensely run races in the early months of the year in Australia. Fangirl was a game second to Anamoe in two Group 1 races at a mile and 7 1/2 furlongs in Australia in late February and March. Anamoe is a leading contender for the title of Australia’s Horse of the Year for the 2022-2023 season. The field has one other runner with an American background in Going Global, a 5-year-old Irish-bred mare who won nine stakes in California for trainer Phil D’Amato in 2021 and 2022, including the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks in 2021. Sold for $2.5 million last November in Kentucky, Going Global was 16th in the Doncaster Mile last Australia in her debut in that country. She is rated as a 100-1 chance in early betting for the Winx. Randwick has a 10-race program beginning at 9:35 p.m. Eastern or 6:35 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
