With two wins in her first three races, Alchermes is off to a fine start and could be the beneficiary of a low weight assignment in a handicap at 7 1/2 furlongs on Thursday at Kembla Grange Racecourse in Australia. Alchermes, trained by Ron Quinton, was third in her debut in late February before winning consecutive starts in a maiden race at six furlongs on March 14 and a handicap at seven furlongs on April 7 at Kembla Grange. In both races, Alchermes closed from off the pace, winning her most recent start by a half-length under jockey Shaun Guymer, who has the mount Thursday. Alchermes, a 3-year-old Southern Hemisphere filly by the Exceed and Excel stallion Excelebration, will carry 126.7 pounds, well below topweight Greek Hero at 132 in the field of 11. Kembla Grange, located south of Sydney, has an eight-race program on Thursday, beginning at 10:20 p.m. Eastern, or 7:20 p.m. Pacific, on Wednesday. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com. Greek Hero, a 4-year-old English-bred gelding, will have his debut in Australia on Thursday. Last year, Greek Hero won minor races in Britain at Thirsk and Musselburgh when trained by Declan Carroll. :: Get free past performances, analysis, and picks for Australian racing Now trained by brothers Richard and Michael Freedman, Greek Hero had two schooling races at 4 1/2 furlongs and five furlongs at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in April in preparation for Thursday’s race, which drew a competitive field. Race conditions appear to favor Bernson, El Coyote, and Extreme Jewel. Bernson has not raced since December when he led throughout a one-mile handicap at Wyong Racecourse as the 4-5 favorite. He could play an important role in this race from the front. El Coyote closed with interest to finish second by a half-length in a seven-furlong handicap on April 16 at Goulborn Racecourse in his first start since August. El Coyote won a seven-furlong handicap at Kembla Grange last June. Extreme Jewel, another 3-year-old filly, has won two of her last three starts, with the wins in a maiden race at seven furlongs at Canberra last November in which she raced near the front throughout, and a seven-furlong handicap on April 17 at Towac Park in Orange when she closed from eighth in a field of 13.
