ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The impeccably bred 3-year-old colt Ready Shakespeare will take center stage when debuting in Thursday’s fifth race, a seven-furlong maiden special on the roomy main turf at Woodbine. A homebred owned by Charles Fipke, Ready Shakespeare has posted several solid works for Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield, including five-eighths in 59.40 seconds over the turf training course on July 9. A week earlier, he outworked stakes winner Ready for the Lady when breezing five-eighths in 1:01.40 on the Tapeta under jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson. Ready Shakespeare is by the 14 percent grass sire More Than Ready, who has sired nearly 11 percent first-out winners in North America. His dam, Lady Shakespeare, won the Grade 2 New York at Belmont Park and produced the three-time Sovereign Award winner Lady Speightspeare, who took the Grade 1 Natalma and Grade 2 Nassau over this very course. His full sister, Ready Lady, was victorious in an allowance here on the grass in June for Attfield. Going back five years, Attfield has won at a 33 percent clip with first-timers in turf sprints, with a positive return on investment of $4.25. Celentano is making his first main-turf start off a fifth-place finish on the Tapeta, during which he saved ground in third over an outside-biased surface before tiring. The son of Honor Code was previously third in a five-furlong dash on the inner turf that was won by the rapid Silent Reserve, who subsequently ran second in an Ontario-sired stakes before winning an allowance as the favorite. :: Bet the races with a $250 First Deposit Match + $10 Free Bet and FREE Formulator PPs! The son of Wicked Strong wound up third behind the future allowance winner Last Dawn at first asking in a seven-furlong maiden special on the main turf June 10. He faded to sixth after racing prominently when going a mile most recently July 1 and has since worked encouragingly for trainer Krista-Cole Simpson, whose runners tend to improve with racing experience. Leading jockey Kazushi Kimura will ride unraced Gee Que for trainer Angus Burtain. Gee Que is by the 11 percent turf and debut sire Fast Anna. His versatile dam won on the grass, but she has been a poor producer, without a turf winner to her credit. Gee Que has posted many above average works, including five-eighths in 1:00.60 on July 16, which ranked 20th among 94 drills at the distance. Magic Tomahawk is making his first non-Tapeta start off a flat sixth-place finish in a fast-paced maiden special around two turns. His young sire, Good Magic, has sired 12.5 percent grass winners, and his dam placed in maiden special company on the Saratoga sod. Rounding out the fifth race field are Heezespeedy, Chasing Trouble, and Proud Ronin. Post time for the twilight card is 4:50 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
