The 12 juveniles who will be hunting Kentucky Derby points Sunday in the $400,000 Springboard Mile at Remington Park are at various stages of accomplishment. Shoplifted exits the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Embolden is a turf stakes winner out to make a stand on dirt. Rowdy Yates and Jungle Runner have won local stakes, while Answer In and Maximiliano each makes his stakes debut off a big maiden score in Kentucky. Trainer Steve Asmussen sends out three in the race – Rowdy Yates, Jungle Runner, and Shoplifted. The Springboard anchors a card of six stakes on the closing-day program, and its first four finishers will earn Kentucky Derby points on a scale of 10-4-2-1. The Springboard also is part of an all-stakes 50-cent pick four on races 10-13 that has a minimum guaranteed pool of $100,000. KEY CONTENDERS Shoplifted, by Into Mischief Last 3 Beyers: 65-71-73 ◗ He won his debut in July at Saratoga with a Beyer Speed Figure of 83, then returned to finish second in the track’s Grade 1 Hopeful. A closer, he went on to run seventh to wire-to-wire winner Storm the Court in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita. “The colt’s got a lot of talent,” Asmussen said of Shoplifted. “He’s a beautiful horse, trains very impressively – impressive enough to get a shot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. I don’t think that he has shown all of his ability in the afternoon yet. I do feel he’s very capable of very good things.” ◗ Ricardo Santana Jr., has the mount from post 9. Embolden, by The Factor Last 3 Beyers: 78-77-74 ◗ He’s moving to dirt for the first time since his debut at Monmouth on July 13, when he was second to eventual stakes winner Meru. Embolden then moved to turf and rolled by 10 lengths in a maiden special weight at Colonial Downs. “He made his first start on dirt, and the only reason we went to the grass after that was he’s a Virginia-bred and there was a $100,000 Virginia-bred stakes on the turf at Colonial,” trainer Michael Stidham said. “For that reason, we decided to make his second start on turf, and he was able to come back and win the Virginia-bred stakes, the Jamestown. He was running so well on the grass, we felt like if it’s not broke, we’re not going to fix it. We kept him on the grass the next couple of races in New York, and he ran well in those.” ◗ Embolden was third in the Grade 3 Futurity at Belmont, won by eventual Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint hero Four Wheel Drive. Embolden then ran second in the Atlantic Beach at Aqueduct, which has produced two next-out allowance winners. ◗ Brian Hernandez Jr. has the mount from post 8. Rowdy Yates, by Morning Line Last 3 Beyers: 76-77-78 ◗ The winner of the Ellis Park Juvenile, he has won back-to-back stakes by open lengths at Remington, taking the Oklahoma Classics Juvenile at six furlongs and the Don McNeill at a mile. The starts came following a fifth-place finish in the Grade 3 Iroquois at Churchill. “I thought his race in the Iroquois was better than it looked on paper,” Asmussen said. “Obviously, his confidence should be where you want it coming off his last two wins.” ◗ Richard Eramia has the mount from post 3. Jungle Runner, by Candy Ride Last 3 Beyers: 66-60-57 ◗ A year after Long Range Toddy pulled a Clever Trevor-Springboard double for the Asmussen barn, the stable is back with another Clever Trevor winner in Jungle Runner. “He has every right to continue the trend,” Asmussen said. ◗ Ramon Vazquez has the mount from post 5. Answer In, by Dialed In Beyers: 83-68 ◗ He owns the field’s best last-race Beyer Speed Figure, an 83, for a maiden special weight win over seven furlongs in his second career start Oct. 27 at Churchill Downs. Answer In won off by 5 1/4 lengths and was flattered when the second-place finisher, Race Driver, came back to win a maiden special weight route at the same track with a Beyer of 70. ◗ Answer In made his career debut in September at Churchill and ran second by a nose to South Bend, who would go on to win both an allowance at the track and it’s $123,000 Street Sense. ◗ Brad Cox, who trains Answer In, is seeking a sweep of the two richest races at the meet in the Springboard. In September, he won the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby with Owendale. ◗ Javier Castellano has the mount on Answer In from post 4.
