Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen has brought the proven young horse Rowdy Yates and the promising prospect Code Runner to Sunland Park on Sunday for the $100,000 Riley Allison Derby. The mile race is the first of two local preps for the Grade 3, $700,000 Sunland Derby. Others in the field of seven include two-time stakes winner Arizona Jeremy and recent allowance winner Competitive Idea. The Riley Allison is one of three stakes on the card. Rowdy Yates is a three-time stakes winner, with his most recent score coming at a mile in the $75,000 Don McNeill on Nov. 15 at Remington Park. He stalked the pace and went on to a clear win – just as he did when he won at six furlongs in the $100,000 Oklahoma Classics Juvenile in October. Rowdy Yates registered his other stakes win going wire to wire in the $84,000 Ellis Park Juvenile over seven furlongs in August. “He’s an extremely versatile horse,” said Asmussen. “I think Sunland will suit him very well.” Asmussen, who has won two runnings of the Sunland Derby, trains Rowdy Yates for L and N Racing. He has given the mount to Luis Contreras. Code Runner finished second by a nose in a maiden special weight in his last start, but was placed first via a disqualification. The race came over six furlongs Dec. 15 at Remington. Before the start, Code Runner had run second in a pair of maiden special weights at a mile at Remington. He’s a promising son of Honor Code and the Grade 1-winning mare Nereid. “I don’t believe we’ve seen the best of him yet,” said Asmussen. Code Runner races for Calumet Farm and will be ridden by Alfredo Juarez Jr. The $65,000 Borderplex for 3-year-old fillies over 6 1/2 furlongs is the first step on the local road to the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks. The field of eight includes Our Iris Rose, a full sister to Runaway Ghost, a winner of the Sunland Derby who also won the Riley Allison. Ry Eikleberry has the mount for trainer Todd Fincher. Dynasty of Her was a debut winner at Golden Gate and Topless recently placed in a stakes at Remington. Blazing Navarone is the 125-pound highweight for the $100,000 Johnie L. Jamison, a 6 1/2-furlong race for 4-year-olds and up bred in New Mexico. He won an allowance at the distance last month at Sunland.
