Jena Antonucci, the trainer of Belmont and Travers winner Arcangelo, has been named the recipient of the Big Sport of Turfdom by the award’s administrator, the Turf Publicists of America. Antonucci, who is a brand ambassador for Daily Racing Form, became the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race when Arcangelo won the Belmont this year. The 47-year-old so far has 15 wins this year from 104 starts and $2.1 million in purse earnings. Antonucci first took out her trainer’s license in 2010 after breaking and farm-training horses for Padua Stables. The horses were eventually sent to Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas. In her breakout year, she has emerged as a spokeswoman for issues involving trainers, women in racing, and integrity. “Jena is deserving of this award due to her incredible achievements and leadership in our sport,” said Najja Thompson, president of the TPA and executive director of New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc. “She is always generous with her time and access to the media.” Antonucci will be presented with the award at a luncheon on Dec. 5 held in conjunction with the University of Arizona Symposium on Racing and Gaming in Tucson, Ariz. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
