HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – There had to be a reason Imprimis was missing from the Silks Run entries this Saturday at Gulfstream Park. “Yes, we’d been pointing Imprimis to the Silks Run for a while,” said Joe Orseno, the trainer of 8-year-old Imprimis, one of the top turf sprinters on the continent the last few years. “Unfortunately, a little something came up and we had to miss it.” Imprimis, an earner of $883,483 from 21 starts, figured to challenge Arrest Me Red for favoritism Saturday in the Silks Run, which would have been his first start in more than six months. But that’s now a moot point. Instead, Orseno is focused on getting the Florida-bred gelding back to full health, or else retirement might be imminent. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports “He’d had a second throat operation after his last race” when 10th in the Sept. 11 Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint, said Orseno, “and then just the other day he had an ankle flare up on me. It looks like normal wear-and-tear, but we’ve sent him out to Ocala to have him thoroughly diagnosed. “I mean, you take precautions with any horse, but obviously he’s very special to us. It’d be nice to reach $1 million with him, but the horse always comes first. We’ll know more in a few days.” Imprimis, owned by the Breeze Easy partnership of Mike Hall and Sam Ross, has earned a triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure in seven starts, capped by a 110 in winning the five-furlong Silks Run in 54.64 seconds in 2019. The son of Broken Vow won the 2019 Shakertown at Keeneland, and was beaten a nose in the 2021 running. Orseno said a third run for Imprimis in the Shakertown, part of the huge Blue Grass Stakes card April 9, will not be considered for Imprimis because Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Golden Pal is scheduled to run in that race. Imprimis could run in the Twin Spires Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby week, he said.
