OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Neither Andthewinneris nor his stablemate Redistricting got ideal trips in Sunday’s Grade 3, $169,750 Knickerbocker Stakes at Aqueduct. But at the wire it was the Chad Brown-trained duo running one-two with Andthewinneris prevailing by a neck over favored Redistricting in the 1 1/8-mile turf stakes. Last early on under Dylan Davis, Andthewinneris rallied widest of all in the stretch. He outfinished Redistricting, who, under Manny Franco, got stuck behind horses along the rail in the stretch and, though he got out into the clear inside the eighth pole, he couldn’t outfinish his stablemate though he did beat Reckoning Force by a nose for second. Fort Washington was fourth followed by Siege of Boston. “It was nice to run one-two but it was very frustrating for Redistricting,” Brown told NYRA publicity. “I feel bad for his connections because that horse looked like he was probably best. But I’m very proud of Andthewinnersis, who continues to improve for us.” Andthewinneris was making his fourth start for Brown after he had made his first 10 starts for Wayne Catalano. Andthewinneris was coming into the Knickerbocker off a nose defeat in an allowance race here on Sept. 20. :: Bet with the Best! Get FREE All-Access PPs and Weekly Cashback when you wager on DRF Bets. When expected pacesetter Irish Prophet scratched from the Knickerbocker, Dylan Davis, the jockey of Andthewinneris, said he was instructed to get his horse into the race. But Siege of Boston and Fort Washington were intent on getting to the front while Andthewinneris was last, 3 1/2 lengths off the pace through a half-mile in 47.78 seconds. Davis said he was content where he was and launched his bid midway around the far turn. Andthewinneris came into the stretch four wide, but then shied away from Davis’ left-handed whip and came out another path or two. But he was running full speed, so Davis didn’t switch sticks. “I started right-handed on him, and I pulled the left when I got close to the competition,” Davis said. “I kept left-handed because he was shying from it, but he was running from it and it was enough for me to get past the leaders. I didn’t want to switch back to the right and straighten him up. I think that really helped him a lot.” Andthewinneris, a 4-year-old gelding by Oscar Performance owned by Susan Moulton, covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.15 - just 0.05 off the course record set by Passive Management on Sept. 19. He returned $13.60 as the fourth choice in the five-horse field. “He was a victim of a really bad trip in Saratoga and then got caught in a paceless race last time, so it was his turn to have the run of the race and have good luck,” Brown said. “These two-turn turf races can be tricky and he showed up today. I’m very proud of him.” Redistricting was making his first start since last year’s Grade 1 Hollywood Derby, in which he bolted and was pulled up during the running of the race. Brown said Redistricting had a couple of minor things he had to get over and praised owner Seth Klarman’s patience in letting him bring the horse back to the races when he did. “He’s been ready to run for a couple of months now and we were struggling to find the right race for him,” Brown said. “He was more than ready to run today, and my team did a good job off the layoff.” Franco, who rode Redistricting, said he had “an unlucky trip. I was already committed to being there, nothing opened up, I just had to eat it. When he got out and I hit the clear, my horse started running. I got horse but nowhere to run.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
