ARCADIA, Calif. – A 2-year-old filly whose above-average class compensates for her below-average speed is on her way to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies after overcoming another bad trip to win another graded stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita. And Tell Me Nolies ($18.80) won the Grade 2 Chandelier Stakes by three-quarters of a length; her 1:46.15 final time for 1 1/16 miles was not impressive (75 Beyer Speed Figure). But the same as her recent win in the low-rated Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante, the Peter Miller-trained Arrogate filly overcame compromising circumstances to win Saturday. “She stumbled very badly,” jockey Ramon Vazquez said, and he was not exaggerating. The takeoff prevented her from establishing a forward position, and she dropped to the back half of the field. Vazquez stayed cool, and And Tell Me Nolies did the rest in a race that fell apart up front. :: Get ready for Santa Anita racing with DRF PPs, Clocker Reports, Picks, and more. The filly lagged in fifth, picked up steam on the far turn, rallied outside as the pacesetters wilted, hit the front at the head of the lane, and held off late-runner Uncontrollable. Justique, the 6-5 favorite who was last early, passed tired horses and finished 4 3/4 lengths back in third. The four fillies who set or pressed the pace finished in the back of the field to complete the order of finish. They were fourth- through sixth-place finishers Ice Dancing, Home Cooking, Naughty Lottie, and Huntingcoco. Peter Redekop owns And Tell Me Nolies, who made three starts in summer at Del Mar including a tough-trip win in the Del Mar Debutante for Vazquez and Miller. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2022: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division “She’s withstood problems,” Miller said, “and Ramon didn’t panic. She kind of lost position, but she showed what kind of filly she is.” The Chandelier was a Win and You’re In race for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. That is where she is headed. “On to the Breeders’ Cup,” Miller said. And Tell Me Nolies was purchased for $230,000 this spring at a 2-year-old in training sale by Redekop racing manager Bryan Anderson. With her third straight win, she has earned $352,800 from four starts. As for the slow final time, Miller noted “I don’t think they’re going to pay us any less.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
