There is getting out over one’s skis, and then there is the price on Great Navigator in the Friendly Lover Handicap on Sunday at Monmouth Park. Even money on the track’s morning line, Great Navigator went off at 1-9 facing seven rivals in the $85,000 Friendly Lover. Three beat him, including Amatteroftime, who posted a 25-1 upset in this one-mile dirt race for older New Jersey-breds. Amatteroftime, a 9-year-old by Eskendereya out of the Victory Gallop mare Victory Pool, last had seen racing in September, when he was beaten 22 lengths in the Charles W. Hesse, the same kind of race as the Friendly Lover. Nonetheless, the gelding was an improbable winner, not an impossible one. Amatteroftime came into the Friendly Lover with more than $561,000 in earnings, and at various points in his career had raced competitively with lower-level open-stakes horses. When last seen racing in September at Monmouth, Amatteroftime ran for owner-trainer Silvino Ramirez. Amatteroftime started Sunday for owner East Street Stable and trainer Miguel Penaloza. Great Navigator figured to be a defined Friendly Lover favorite, but it was difficult to foresee such a desperately low price. The 4-year-old Holly Crest Farm homebred trained by Eddie Owens had won a two-turn New Jersey-bred stakes race by 10 lengths last summer. He also had lost a New Jersey-bred allowance race, his only other two-turn race, by almost eight lengths. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Still, Great Navigator a furlong into the Friendly Lover had taken up a favorable position just behind and outside the leader, stretch-out sprinter No Cents. No Cents, it turns out, was walking on the lead, and there came 85-1 shot Kaz Sweet Heist, zooming up wide with an early bid to quicken the tempo. Irish Meadow followed Kaz Sweet Heist, and suddenly Great Navigator was stuck in fourth, racing behind horses. Those early moves didn’t do much for the tempo. The half-mile split was a slow 49.54, and No Cents, rating kindly enough, opened a lead of about five lengths midway around the far turn. Paco Lopez aboard Great Navigator had room on the rail, riding his mount hard to gain on No Cents, and for a moment, past the quarter-pole, it looked the favorite would make good on his vast support – but only for a moment. After drawing abreast No Cents, Great Navigator promptly ran out of gas. Amatteroftime never appeared to be going especially well, nor did he finish off the Friendly Lover with a burst, but he came home well enough to win by three-quarters of a length over No Cents, who saw out the trip better than the favorite. Irish Boolum was outside and just behind Amatteroftime in upper stretch but failed to finish as well as the winner and checked in third at 31-1, three lengths behind No Cents. Amatteroftime paid $53.20 and clocked 1:39.74 for the mile over a fast track as Great Navigator lost his way. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
