Ag Bullet’s second trip from California to Kentucky turned out far, far better than her first. Ninth of 10 while beaten more than 20 lengths in the Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill Downs in May, Ag Bullet rocketed home a 5 1/4-length winner Saturday at Kentucky Downs in the Grade 2, $1,378,260 Ladies Turf Sprint. Ag Bullet, trained by Richard Baltas for Calvin Nguyen and Joey Tran, blasted out of the gate to establish a clear early lead, took token pressure around the turn from Kaufymaker while going along at an easy rhythm, and after disposing of Kaufymaker opened an insurmountable lead, never threatened in an impressive performance. “She’s absolutely fast,” jockey Umberto Rispoli said. How fast? Ag Bullet, racing over a firm course with the temporary rail set at 50 feet, was timed in 1:14.19 for 6 1/2 furlongs, a course record. :: Bet with the Best! The 4-year-old filly, by Twirling Candy out of Noble Grey, by Forestry, Ag Bullet now has six wins from seven grass starts, her only loss the Distaff Turf Mile, which was run over a wet course. Ag Bullet is 4 for 4 racing 6 1/2 furlongs and was nearly as good capturing the one-mile, two-turn Osunitas on July 21, her first start since the Distaff Turf Mile, as she was at Kentucky Downs. “This is special. I came all this way just for her. It couldn’t have been better than this,” Rispoli said. Baltas shipped Ag Bullet from California early in the week. Reports quickly came that the filly did not at all mind a grass course much different than those back home. “I didn’t expect her to run that good. I knew that she was training lights out,” Baltas said. “The first day she galloped over the track, my rider said she just loves it, absolutely skipping over the track. I had a hard time putting the saddle on her. She’s just got that fire inside of her.” Ag Bullet was 12-1 on the morning line, was 6-1 with about a minute to post, and clicked down to 4-1 in the starting gate. The late money wasn’t done. One final plunge and she went off the 5-2 favorite, paying $7.94 to win. Don’tlookbackatall, favored until the money poured in on the winner, stalked the pace and finished second, two lengths clear of third-place Ocean Club. Ag Bullet began her career with a different trainer, missed the better part of a year recovering from a small chip in her knee before making her first start for Baltas, and aside from the Distaff Turf Mile has been literally unbeatable on grass courses – be they in California or, as she showed Saturday, in Kentucky. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
