OZONE PARK, N.Y. — Following a one-day cancellation of  live racing due to unsafe air quality at the upper levels of Aqueduct live racing resumed Saturday, but not all operations resumed as normal. The people most impacted by the unhealthy air quality on Friday – the stewards, the track announcer, the teletimer operator, placing judges, and Equibase personnel – did not return to their typical posts Saturday and instead were relocated to other parts of the building. Track announcer Chris Griffin called the races from the set of Talking Horses on the first floor. Other officials, including the stewards, were relocated to the tote room, the stewards’ office on the main floor as well as in a private room on the second-floor horsemen’s lounge over the looking the paddock and finish line. :: Bet with the Best! On Friday, Resorts World, which operates the casino adjacent to Aqueduct, treated the roof with a product that created air quality issues on the building’s top floor. Those air-quality issues, which made it impossible for key racing officials to do their jobs in their usual spots in the building, prompted NYRA to cancel Friday’s nine-race card. NYRA utilized industrial fans overnight to allow for further ventilation, according to a NYRA release. Additionally, NYRA officials were in contact with Resorts World Casino officials to confirm the product used on the roof has reached its recommended time to dissipate. Still, there was enough of a chemical smell that prompted racing officials to be relocated Saturday for the 11-race card. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
