OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Trainer Jorge Abreu sent out the runner-up in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies with 17-1 shot Jody’s Pride. He hopes to be able to go one better in next month’s $2 million Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar with Scottish Lassie, the upset winner of Saturday’s Grade 1, $400,000 Frizette at Aqueduct. Jody’s Pride went to the Breeders’ Cup off of two sprint victories and Abreu had a belief she would actually be better on the turf. Still, Jody’s Pride finished second, beaten a neck by Just F Y I. Scottish Lassie will go into the Juvenile Fillies off a dominant nine-length victory in the Frizette, a one-turn-mile race she came into as a maiden having finished third in her lone prior start. Abreu believes Scottish Lassie is a true route horse who will appreciate the 1 1/16 miles and two turns of the Juvenile Fillies. “I thought she wanted to go long all along, that’s why I waited to run her seven furlongs,” Abreu said, referring to Scottish Lassie’s debut at Saratoga that came on Sept. 1. Scottish Lassie, ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. that day, was sent off the favorite in her debut. She broke a little slow, then chased a hot pace, vied for the lead at the top of the lane and got a little tired, finishing 6 1/4 lengths behind Quickick, a horse that had already made a start. Quickick came back to run second in Friday’s Grade 1 Alcibiades. :: Bet with the Best! Jose Lezcano rode Scottish Lassie, who gave Abreu his first graded stakes victory of his training career, which began in 2016. “It means a lot, especially with this filly,” Abreu said. “I bought her, I trained her, I picked the races. Steve Weston [head of Parkland Thoroughbreds] is one of my main clients. And it’s not a Grade 2 or Grade 3, it’s a Grade 1.” Abreu said Scottish Lassie, who earned a 90 Beyer Speed Figure for the Frizette win, would likely have two workouts at Belmont Park before shipping to Del Mar on Oct. 28. Snowyte, who finished second in the Frizette after finishing second in the same maiden race in which Scottish Lassie was third, is also being pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, trainer Danny Gargan said. What a month for Clement Over the last five week trainer Christophe Clement has won 11 stakes at seven tracks. While it may not result in a large contingent for next month’s Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar, it does bode for well for the end of this year and 2025. Clement’s most recent stakes wins came Saturday at Aqueduct when Carson’s Run captured the Grade 3, $500,000 Jockey Club Derby and Senbei dominated the Grade 3 Belmont Turf Sprint. Clement actually ran one-two in the Jockey Club Derby as Deterministic finished second. Clement is not thinking Breeders’ Cup for either of those 3-year-olds. He said after the race should either one run again this year, it would most likely be in the Grade 1, $300,000 Hollywood Derby on Nov. 30 at Del Mar. If not, both would get a break before their 4-year-old campaigns. Carson’s Run received a 90 Beyer Speed Figure, Deterministic got an 89. Senbei, a New York-bred gelding by Candy Ride, won his fifth stakes and first on turf when he captured the Belmont Turf Sprint by 1 1/4 lengths, earning a career-best 98 Beyer Speed Figure. Clement said Senbei and / or Big Invasion, who finished fourth in the Eddie D Stakes at Santa Anita, “might” be considered for the Turf Sprint. La Mehana, who won the Grade 3 Waya on Friday, will likely be considered for the Grade 3, $300,000 Long Island on Nov.10. Clement’s one definite Breeders’ Cup starter is Far Bridge, winner of the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic on Sept. 28. Far Bridge is back in Saratoga, where he will prepare for the BC Turf and can work on Saratoga's Oklahoma turf course. Clement will seek more stakes success on Saturday at Aqueduct when the barn sends out Style Points in the Grade 2, $200,000 Sands Point Stakes for 3-year-old fillies and the uncoupled entry of Loon Cry and Love Appeals in the $135,000 Floral Park Stakes. Style Points is coming into the Sands Point off a dead-heat victory in the Virginia Oaks. “The race was good in Virginia,” said Christophe Lorieul, Clement’s Belmont-based assistant. “I don’t know how much she beat. She always seems to hang a little bit the last part of her races, but she’s doing well.” Loon Cry is coming into the Floral Park off two stakes victories including one over Love Appeals in the Sensible Lady Stakes at Laurel Park on Sept. 14. With the Angels has two options The connections of the undefeated New York-bred 2-year-old filly With the Angels opted to pass last Saturday’s Grade 1 Frizette for a more conservative route. With the Angels will now aim for either the $200,000 Maid of the Mist Stakes for New York-breds on Oct. 27 or the $150,000 Tempted on Nov. 2. Both races are run at one mile. “Felt like it was too much too soon,” trainer Linda Rice said of running in the Frizette two weeks after With the Angels won the Joseph A. Gimma Stakes. “I don’t want to get in a hurry. She’s a nice filly.” With the Angels, a daughter of Omaha Beach, won her maiden on Aug. 22 by 11 1/2 lengths and the Gimma by 9 3/4 lengths on Sept. 22. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
