A colt by champion and leading freshman sire Mitole sold for $95,000 to lead the first day of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s winter mixed sale on Tuesday. The OBS winter sale is taking place over two sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Tuesday session was designated as the preferred session of mixed stock and also had a selection of horses of racing age. OBS reported each of those categories with separate figures. Wednesday’s second and final session is designated as an open session. Led by the Mitole colt, OBS reported 75 horses sold for a total of $1,738,400 in the open session, compared with 99 horses grossing $2,696,700 in the same portion of the 2023 sale. The average price for the section was $23,179, down 15 percent compared with $27,239 a year ago. The median price dropped 20 percent, to $16,000 from $20,000 last year. The buyback rate was 31 percent; it was 13 percent last year. The Mitole colt was purchased by Calumet Farm, from the consignment of Silver Oaks Farm, as agent. The yearling, a February foal, is from the third crop of his sire, the Eclipse Award champion male sprinter of 2019 whose four Grade 1 wins that season were highlighted by the Metropolitan Handicap and Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Mitole was the leading freshman sire by both earnings and winners last season, with his top runners including Grade 3 winner V V's Dream, stakes winner Ice Cold, and five other stakes-placed winners. Mitole’s session-topper is out of the winning Tapit mare Wild Hickory. Her dam is Chilean champion Hickory, dam of Grade 2-winning millionaire Alert Bay. Another Chilean champion, Divina Preciosa, appears on the catalog page. While the average and median figures declined in the preferred section, the horses of racing age section posted some gains, despite a smaller number sold. OBS reported that 26 horses grossed $505,000, compared with 95 selling for a total of $1,583,800 in 2023. The average was $19,423, rising 17 percent compared with $16,672 a year ago. The median price was $11,000, a 10 percent jump from $10,000 last year. The buyback rate was 31 percent in the selective market; it was 14 percent in 2023. Leading the horses of racing age section was an unraced 3-year-old filly from the first crop of Enticed, purchased for $70,000 by Emerald Sales, as agent for K E M Stables. The Ohio-bred filly, who was consigned by Gutierrez Sales, as agent, breezed three furlongs in 33 seconds flat during Monday’s under-tack preview show on the Ocala Training Center’s all-weather Safetrack. Graded stakes winner Enticed finished eighth on the 2023 freshman sire earnings list. This filly is out of the winning Formal Dinner mare Pyrite Storm, dam of three winners from as many starters. Pyrite Storm is a half-sister to stakes-placed Rachel Lynn B and Kira’s Wink, and graded stakes winners Miss Pickums and Wilkinson appear on the catalog page.
